IPL: Quinton de Kock makes a statement in first appearance of the season

Quinton de Kock struck a half-century in his first IPL appearance of the season but it was not enough to help his team Lucknow Super Giants to victory against the Gujarat Titans.

The Proteas wicketkeeper-batter has been a shock omission from Lucknow's starting line-up but the got an opportunity after injury ruled out captain KL Rahul.

Chasing a mammoth target after Gujarat racked up 227-2 in the first innings of the game, De Kock hit 70 off 41 balls but his team could only muster a total of 171-7 to lose by 56 runs.

For Gujarat, Proteas middle-order batter David Miller looked in fine touch as he bludgeoned smashed 21 not out off just 12 balls as his side posted the fourth-highest team total this season.

The big total was though set up by openers Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill who shared in a stand of 142 in just 12 overs.

Saha hit 81 off 43 deliveries while Gill carried his bat throughout the innings to be unbeaten on 94 off 51 balls.

The victory sees defending champions Titans sitting pretty at the top of the league standings with eight wins in 11 matches.
