The 26-year-old injured himself during day 2 of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where the Proteas won a thrilling encounter by 30 runs, with Gill unable to bat in the second innings.
The ODI and Test skipper was reportedly hospitalised after retiring hurt in the first innings and remains an injury doubt for the second Test in Guwahati.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has confirmed that the right-handed batsman will travel with the team ahead of the second test this weekend.
"Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November 2025," said BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
"He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly."
According to reports, batting all-rounder Nitesh Reddy is on standby to replace Gill should he be unable to be fit in time for day one of the match on Saturday.
India will be facing South Africa at the Barsapara Stadium and will be looking to level the two match Test Series.
