Eliz-Mari Marx grateful for Proteas Women return despite India loss

All-rounder Eliz-Mari Marx was grateful for another chance to represent South Africa, despite losing the fourth T20 International against India by 14 runs at the Wanderers last night.

This was Marx’s first match for the Proteas Women since 2024, after being called up for this series in place of seamer Masabata Klaas.

Having earned only her 11th cap despite making her debut three years ago, she explained that that the competition for spots in the team is tough and she had to wait her turn.

"I think, if you look at it, there's a lot of all-rounders I'm competing with – Nadine de Klerk, obviously, Marizanne Kapp, so I think it's difficult to compete with those people," said Marx.

"But those certain players are definitely people that I look up to, so it's actually an opportunity and privilege to compete with players in that class, so I just take what they do and try to run with it."

Marx took two wickets for 28 runs at the Bullring and revealed that she had been working on her bowling with coach Mandla Mashimbyi since arriving in camp in an effort to improve her game.

"Coach Mandla and I have been putting in some nice work in the last couple of days, in terms of angles and stuff, so I think that's been pretty good," she said.

"It's paying off quite nicely and, ja, I got two big scalps so I take that. I think there are a lot of aspects to cricket, not just the skills side, I think in the last couple of years I've also given a lot of attention to detail in terms of my mental side.

"I've tried to work on aspects to keep staying in the game and, even if it means I'm not on the field, it's just to keep working on aspects that I need to improve on."
