Australia draw first bood in three-match T20I series against New Zealand

Captain Mitch Marsh led from the front with the bat as Australia beat New Zealand by six wickets in the first of three T20Is played in Mount Maunganui on Wednesday.

Chasing a target of 182, Marsh struck 85 from just 43 balls as the visitors surged to victory with 21 balls to spare.

Marsh and opening partner Travis Head gave Australia a quick start, putting on 67 in just 5.3 overs, before the first wicket fell.

Matthew Short though joined his skipper at the crease and continued the momentum with 29 from 18 deliveries.

Short lost wicket his wicket 12th over while Marsh's innings came to an end 15th over before Tim David finished the game with unbeaten from just 12 balls.

Earlier, Tim Robinson hit a maiden international century as New Zealand recovered from being 6-3 to post a total of 181-6 in their 20 overs.

Batting at number three, Robinson watched on Ben Dwarshuis (2-40) and Josh Hazlewood (1-23) made early inroads into the home team's batting line-up.

Robinson however found a willing partner in Daryl Mitchell (34 off 23 balls) as the duo rebuilt the innings with a stand of 92 for the fourth wicket.

Ben Jacobs also contributed 20 as the Black Caps breached the 180-run mark but it was not enough to get a victory.
