Junior Boks squander healthy lead as they fall to defeat against Australia

In what was a game of two halves, the Aussies did very well to dominate the territorial game after the break as they grew in confidence, while the Junior Boks failed to capitalise on their opportunities, especially in the first half.

The Junior Boks, who led by 14-0 at the break, started like a house on fire, with Xola Nyali (flanker) scoring a maul try in the third minute. Vusi Moyo (flyhalf) converted from the sideline to give the hosts a 7-0.

The Australians were under pressure in the scrums and lineouts, while the Junior Boks ran with intent and put in some big hits when their opponents had the ball, but they made silly mistakes and failed to turn this into points, allowing the men in gold to work their way back into the game.

Australia capitalised from a few lineout throws that weren't straight and turned over possession on the ground a few times, but the Junior Boks' defence held firm, keeping the pressure on their opponents.

This pressure finally reaped rewards as Siya Ndlozi (wing) scored an intercept try just before the half-hour mark, showing great pace to beat the cover defence. Moyo converted and 14-0 was a fair reflection of play at that stage.

The Junior Boks' scrum ascendancy continued to such an extent that Australia lost Trevor King (prop) to the sin bin for repeated infringements. With the clock into the red in the first half, the Junior Boks launched one last maul attack, but after Nyali went over, the try was disallowed by the TMO for obstruction at the lineout.

Moyo made it 17-0 with an early penalty goal in the second half, but Australia grew in confidence and as their passes started to stick, they forced the Junior Boks onto the backfoot.

Three tries in 15 minutes swung the game in favour of the Aussies, with Eamon Doyle (lock), Edwin Langi (replacement prop) and Lipina Ata (replacement hooker) crossing for the visitors.

Sid Harvey (fullback) converted all three and with just under 20 minutes to go, Australia took a 21-17 lead, somewhat against the run of play, although they deserve credit for putting the Junior Bok defence under pressure, with their tactical kicking game also helping their cause.

Attacking with confidence, the Aussies crossed for what looked to be a great try by Nick Conway (wing), only to be denied by a superb cover tackle by Cheswill Jooste.

Two minutes later, Conway again made lots of ground down the left, but this time his inside pass found Xavier Rubens (centre), who scored Australia's fourth try to make it a nine-point game with 10 minutes on the clock.

When Harvey landed a penalty goal five minutes later, it was game over for the Junior Boks, despite a good try by Batho Hlekani to give South Africa a losing bonus point.

In the first game on Tuesday, New Zealand were in impressive form as they scored a bonus-point 75-21 victory over Argentina's Pumitas, crossing the tryline 11 times and slotting 10 conversions, while only conceding three tries.

After two rounds, New Zealand lead the standings with seven points, followed by Australia on six, South Africa on five and Argentina on zero. On Sunday, the Aussies and Pumitas cross swords at 14h00, while the final match is at 16h10 between the Junior Boks and the Kiwis.

Kagiso Rabada not out of the woods just yet

On Monday, the South African Institute for Drug-free Sport issued a statement announcing the lifting of the ban after the pacer satisfactorily completed two sessions of a substance abuse treatment programme.

However, the organisation’s CEO Khalid Galant has now told SABC Sport that there is a 30-day period provisioned for any appeals to the sanction that has been handed down, effectively meaning Rabada may yet find himself being iced out for more than just a month.

“The case is considered closed, however, there is a 30-day period for appeals. The people who have the right to appeal would be the International Cricket Council and the World Anti-Doping Agency. If they choose to exercise the right to appeal the sanction or decision that SAIDS handed down, they will have 30 days from when it was rendered”, revealed Galant.

He went on to say that illicit or recreational drugs are classified differently and banned in competition, while performance-enhancing drugs are banned both in and out of competition. He explained why this is the case.

“The rationale behind illicit drugs such a cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and ecstasy being banned in sport is that it is considered against the spirit of sport, and especially with well-known athletes, in terms of character, education, and excellence in performance. It is deemed that these drugs that fall under substance abuse are harmful to the spirit of sport and obviously a danger to the athletes’ health”.

Rabada failed the drug test after an SA20 match between MI Cape Town and Durban Super Giants in January. He is currently back with his IPL side Gujarat Titans in India.

Inacio Miguel on the fence over Orlando Pirates 'advantage'

Chiefs have the benefit of six days to prepare for Saturday's high-stake Soweto Derby, following their Betway Premiership defeat to their arch-rivals at FNB Stadium last weekend, while Pirates have to face Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium tonight.

Asked whether it is advantageous to have no midweek match prior to the all-important cup final, Miguel admitted it would have helped Amakhosi move on from the recent 2-1 defeat.

"Yeah, for me, personally, after [Saturday's Derby] loss, if I could I would play the next game to forget the bad result, but, of course, with more time to prepare, it's easier for us because we have more days to prepare technically and mentally," said Miguel.

"[Pirates] have to be ready for their game, but we also had that problem in the past, playing three [times] in seven days – of course, it's difficult but it's something we or they can't control.

"We have to focus on what we can control, and what we can focus on and control right now is to prepare for the game during the week."

Pressed on whether that suggests that Pirates have an advantage, the Angolan international insisted his personal preference is to be in The Buccaneers' shoes of having a midweek game.

"There are many points of view. If you ask me, if I prefer to train or to play, I will tell you to play, of course, so for me as a player, if I play in the middle of the week and then on the weekend, for me personally, it will be better," he added.

"But in terms of the physical [aspect] and mentally, maybe the best option would be without a game in the middle of the week, but yeah, it is what it is."

Friedhelm Funkel returns to FC Koln for third stint as head coach

The 71-year-old German, originally from Neuss, returns to manage the club for the third time, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record in steering struggling teams to safety.

Funkel is well known to Koln supporters, having played a pivotal role in the club's survival during the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign.

He now takes charge again, this time with Koln battling in the 2. Bundesliga, as the club looks to arrest its current decline and push for a more stable finish to the season.

"I wasn't anticipating it but, in football, things that one never thought possible do occur. Even I didn't think it possible until yesterday. It's a really good feeling," said Funkel.

Renowned for his ability to lift underperforming sides, Funkel has coached ten different German clubs across a storied career.

His longest and perhaps most notable tenure came at Fortuna DÃƒ¼sseldorf, where he remained until his departure in January 2020 while the team was still in the Bundesliga.

Most recently, Funkel was in charge of FC Kaiserslautern, where he once again showcased his rescue credentials.

Under his leadership, FCK avoided relegation to the 3. Liga and reached the DFB Pokal final, narrowly losing to Bayer Leverkusen.

Koln fans will hope that Funkel's experience and pragmatic style can provide much-needed stability in the coming months.

Blitzboks Aim to Build on LA Success – Davids

The Blitzboks went unbeaten in Los Angeles, finishing with a 19-5 win over Spain to claim the World Championship title.

Davids believes consistency was the key difference.

"This was our most consistent tournament. The main thing for us was to just stay in the moment, it doesn't matter if things go well or badly, if you relish the moment and forget the past, then you will be successful," said Davids.

Argentina finished with 104 points and claimed the overall SVNS World Series title.

The World Championship winners, the Blitzbokke, ended the series in fourth with 70 points, their only triumph coming in Cape Town.

Named Player of the Final, Davids says they’ll need to replicate their World Championship form to improve next season.

"In sevens rugby, the most important thing is to just remain consistent, not just in one tournament, but throughout the series.

Next year is going to bring more tournaments than before, so if we can remain consistent for nine tournaments in a row, things are going to be great," asserted the Blitzbok's captain.

South Africa bounced back when it mattered most after arriving in LA at the back of two disappointing ninth-place finishes, in Singapore and Hong Kong, the skipper praised the team’s all-round effort.

The trio of Ronald Brown, Mfundo Ndhlovu, and Quewin Nortje boosted the squad for the trip to the USA, and that benefitted Phillip Snyman’s outfit.

Despite an up-and-down campaign, Davids says the team played with heart and pride, fighting for each other and the badge.

Proteas Women looking to turn things around against India

South Africa have yet to taste victory in the series, having lost to both India and Sri Lanka in their previous two clashes so far.

But coach Mashimbyi says they have identified their opponents’ vulnerabilities in the process, and they’re confident of wins in their remaining matches.

"The only way we can turn it around is if we win the two games, and we are focussing on doing that," said Mashimbyi.

"There are a couple of things that we've looked into, how they're going about their game and see where we can actually neutralise them, and hopefully with our plans and our execution, it works out for us.

"But, definitely, we've picked up areas where we can actually infiltrate and try and neutralise them – both teams basically – and hopefully that works out for us and we come out with two W's, and hopefully the third one [final] as well."

SA batted first in their second game on Friday and posted 235 in their allotted 50 overs. The coach says although they couldn’t defend that total, he still backs his bowlers or batters to chase depending on the pitch conditions.

"Depending on conditions, it will dictate what decision we'll take [to bat or bowl first], but whichever way we look at it, we just have to pitch up and make sure we get to the score, if we have to chase, and post a good score, if we bat first," he added.

"And we also need to make sure we put them under pressure with the ball, if we bowl first or if we bowl second, so we just have to make sure we nail our plans and execute accordingly.

"Like I said, I think this team carries a lot more than the other teams – maybe the other teams just understand the conditions a little bit better, and that's where we're falling a bit short."

Head coach Kevin Foote has shuffled his squad, bringing in fresh legs and international experience in a bid to maintain momentum after their opening win over Argentina.

Four players who featured in last year’s SA U20 campaign: JC Mars, Wandile Mlaba, Batho Hlekani, and Herman Lubbe, have cracked the starting line-up for the Australia encounter. Foote emphasised the importance of squad rotation given the compact nature of the tournament, with three high-intensity fixtures squeezed into just 11 days.

With one game to go, Beganovic has led Galaxy to fifth place and in line to deliver the club’s best topflight finish yet, and Sukazi credits the Bosnian mentor for rising above a challenging and “unusual” campaign that could have led to their demise.

"We had a very unusual season, amazing at that, because, as you know, after the first six matches we were rock bottom of the log with two points," reflected Sukazi.

"And in a situation like that, usually at this level of the game, especially in this league which is so tough, you don't come back – but we did.

"At some point we were even hanging around third position, and we're still lying in position five, as you know. So, as unusual as it is, one needs to be grateful – it's not given that we were supposed to recover in the manner that we did.

"And, of course, changing a coach like Sead, bringing in 'Bega' who was his assistant, I got a lot of criticism – many said, 'Ja, he was an assistant, he'll do the same thing.' But I'm sure people have realised there were firm basis and reasons why we opted for Beganovic.

"From our point of view, we wanted continuity and that's what we saw – we had to continue from exactly where Ramovic had left it off."

In his overall assessment, Sukazi says he will be satisfied with a top-eight spot, considering how improbable that position seemed when Ramovic resigned in November.

"We had a helluva run, now we're hitting a bit of a slump – well, maybe it's a better time to hit a slump when you're higher up in the top eight and it's late in the season, with matches almost over," he added.

"But, to be honest, I'm very satisfied because, after six matches when we had two points and rock bottom of the log, if you had asked me what it is that we desire, I would have said, 'We want to escape relegation,' and not necessarily be in the top eight.

"So now we find ourselves, with one match to go, still in the top eight and it looks like we'll end up in the top eight – I could never ask for more."

Durban Ladies coach lambasts the standard of officiating in the HWBSL

This was after referee Palesa Motaung did not stop the match when Okuhle Sithole went down, which led to TUT Matsatsantsa scoring a goal in the dying minutes of the game.

The assistant referee had raised the flag, but play continued.

Sithole was then stretchered off the field then taken to the hospital after the game.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Makhaye says he is very upset.

"I really don't know, I really don't know, maybe we have to look at it, but the way she is right now, it speaks volumes that it's a serious thing. So, how come you could not see it?" Makhaye said.

"The worst thing is the assistant referee raised her flag, then she [the referee] disallowed that, then she let the play continue. It's really not okay, it's not okay and I'm not okay at all.

"If people want to influence results, last week it was the same thing in Durban. If we can bring back that game where she was officiating, also today, it can't be. It's not good for the game, it's not."

The Durban side are currently 14th on the log table and are yet to register a win this season.

Makhaye, who got a red card after confronting the referee and walking onto the field of play to check on the injured player, believes they are undermined by the referees.

"Referees have this tendency of undermining other teams. They come into the field knowing who must lose. It's not okay, they [other teams] must fight for the points, the same way that we are doing," he added.

"So, we mustn't just give people points like that, it can't be. Last week, they charged two penalties against us, with all the advantage going to the other team. So, I'm not too sure what's happening, and I'm not okay with it."

Sithole is currently recovering from the knee injury and will go back to the physiotherapist on Wednesday for another check-up.

Eddie Howe: Jamaal Lascelles close to making Newcastle return

Though back training with Eddie Howe's senior squad, Lascelles was not included in the matchday squad for Sunday's Premier League fixture against Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Serious doubts remain over whether the long-serving centre-back will feature again this season, despite his determination to return before the campaign ends.

"With Jamaal, he is making good progress," Howe said. "Really pleased with how he has looked since coming back to training.

"It has been a slow, steady return, he's certainly not been rushed. Possibly he could be involved before the end of the season but maybe it will depend on injuries with some of the other players within the squad.

"I think maybe for Jamaal it would be better if it was next season but I think if he feels good and has done enough training then [him playing this month] is certainly something we'll look at."

France's former interior minister apologises to Liverpool fans for 2022 Champions League final blame

Speaking in a YouTube interview on the Legend show, Darmanin - now serving as France's justice minister - admitted that security failures and criminal gangs, not English fans, were at the heart of the disorder. He called the incident "the biggest failure" of his career.

"I hadn't checked what was happening properly, which was my mistake," he said. "I gave in to preconceived ideas, the culprit was easy (to designate), and I apologise to Liverpool fans. Of course they were right to be upset."

The final between Liverpool and Real Madrid was delayed by over half an hour after dangerous crowd congestion developed outside the stadium. Thousands of fans were trapped in bottlenecks, and video footage showed French police deploying tear gas and using aggressive crowd control tactics on ticket-holding supporters.

The former Springbok boss - widely credited with helping to engineer the Boks' back-to-back World Cup triumphs - has brought a new edge to Leinster's defence since his arrival in 2023.

But last weekend's semi-final defeat in Dublin has seen Nienaber face criticism along with head coach Leo Cullen. The Irish side had entered the clash riding high, having shut out both Harlequins and Glasgow Warriors in dominant fashion, but they failed to pitch up against the Saints - particularly on the defensive front.

"As a group, we feel that we should have been better defensively," Nienaber told reporters.

"We had the potential to be a lot better... that's the disappointing part. What is our potential in defence? I think it's a lot better than the one that we did deliver.

"When you lose, you have meetings to figure out why. When you win, you have parties. That's the beauty of sport.

“The thing that probably hurts the most is the fact that I think.. the players have full control, but as coaches, we have some control because we have half-time, substitutions and that,” he added.

"For the fans, they don't have control. The only thing that they can give is their full support, [so] I can understand the frustration and the anger.

"That's probably the thing that sickens us the most, for ourselves, the performance we put in.

"Unfortunately, the fans have to live with that, the result we got, which wasn't what we wanted."

Leinster have also faced questions on their team selection, which included leaving All Blacks star Jordie Barrett on the bench for the majority of the match, and Nienaber accepted scrutiny from fans and pundits considering the final result.

"There's a lot of thought that goes into team selection. It's not a 10-minute conversation," Nienaber said. "Because we lost, people will say: 'That's bull****'. That's how it works."

Leinster also had an opportunity to go for posts in the final seconds and force extra time. Instead they opted to go for it at the line only to be denied.

"In hindsight, should we have gone for the posts? Maybe. Because we lost, you tend to say maybe we should have," the former Bok coach added.

Arsene Wenger questions Europa League path to Champions League: 'Not right'

Speaking to BeIN Sports, Wenger voiced his concern just weeks before a potential all-English Europa League final between struggling Premier League sides Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Both teams head into the second legs of their semi-finals with first-leg aggregate leads, edging closer to a showdown in Bilbao - despite languishing in the bottom half of the domestic table.

United currently sit 15th, with Spurs just one place below them. Their subpar league performances have fueled the debate: should such underachieving teams be rewarded with a Champions League spot simply by winning a secondary tournament?

"No - they should qualify automatically for the Europa League again but not necessarily for the Champions League," Wenger stated firmly. "Especially when you're in the Premier League, where already five teams qualify. I think it's something (for UEFA) to think about and to review."

While Wenger acknowledged the logic behind UEFA's rationale - keeping the Europa League engaging by dangling a significant prize - he believes the integrity of Champions League qualification may be undermined when clubs use a backdoor route despite faltering in their domestic leagues.

UEFA introduced the rule in 2014, offering Champions League qualification to Europa League winners in a bid to boost the competition's profile. While it has certainly added stakes, it has also created moments of controversy and imbalance.

The rule has already raised eyebrows in past seasons. In 2023, Sevilla lifted the Europa League trophy while finishing 12th in LaLiga. A year earlier, Eintracht Frankfurt won it after finishing 11th in the Bundesliga. Though their European runs were impressive, their domestic mediocrity begged the question: does winning 13 games in Europe outweigh 38 underwhelming performances at home?

Wenger believes the answer is no - at least not when domestic leagues already offer generous Champions League access.

His perspective is especially relevant this season, as the Premier League has benefited from UEFA's new coefficient-based "extra spot" rule, allowing five teams to qualify instead of the traditional four. With that in place, Wenger sees little justification for allowing a club languishing in the lower half of the table to leapfrog more consistent top-six teams based on a Europa League run.

Still, UEFA's argument is clear: without Champions League qualification on the line, the Europa League risks becoming a second-rate contest with limited appeal. The added incentive has undoubtedly made clubs take the tournament more seriously, with many fielding stronger sides in knockout rounds and fans rallying behind deep European runs.

But Wenger insists that merit should still be the defining factor.

"To keep the Europa League focused, interesting and motivated, you need to give them that prize," he admitted. "But maybe there's another way to achieve that without distorting the competitive balance."

"If I wanted immediate results, it's possible that I might have some problems in defence, with some players, it's also possible for myself to play low block and helicopter football in the first season, and I'm sure I won't lose points as I have this season," said Nabi.

"But, honestly, if Kaizer Chiefs recruited me, it was not to play low-block because there is DNA and I need to respect that DNA of Kaizer Chiefs.

"For Kaizer Chiefs, or any big club around the world, it's not possible to play a low-block for immediate results so that the fans can be happy – you need to take the responsibility."

With an enviable record in Tanzania, where he won back-to-back league and cup doubles as well as ended runners-up in the CAF Confederation Cup with Young Africans, the Tunisian mentor says he's not in South Africa just to further boost his resumé.

Centurion Tazmin Brits limped off with cramp in their opening match against India last week, while wicket-keeper Karabo Meso also had to leave the field early against the hosts with a heat-related illness last week Friday.

Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, Hoffman Kellerman says this is to be expected in the conditions.

“Cramping and heat-associated illness in cricket is not something new. Think of the 2023 World Cup in India, with [Shubman] Gill, [Glenn] Maxwell, and even [Heinrich] Klassen struggling due to dehydration and the heat.

As preparation for this, we have implemented certain training day, pre-match day, and match day protocols that prepare the ladies as best possible from a hydration, electrolyte nutrition, and even a sleep perspective”, said the physio.

She also confirmed that Brits’ cramping was due to the heat, as temperatures often go as high as 39 degrees Celsius with humidity levels rising to 80 percent.

“Tazmin came off during the match against India for off-field management of heat-related cramping and illness. When she was medically deemed to safely return and continue to bat, she returned to complete the innings.”

South Africa has had to wait longer to get back on the field between their second and third matches, and Hoffman Kellerman says this has both its pros and cons.

“Long gaps are a bit of a double-edged sword. While on the one side it will allow for adequate recovery, on the other side, keeping the players match fit can be challenging, especially with restricted training schedules.

Ensuring that there is a good balance between the volume and the intensity for key on-field physical performance metrics during preparation, for example, bowling loads are important,” she concluded.

The Proteas Women will play their third match of the tri-series against India on Wednesday, and Meso has also been medically cleared for selection.

Mamelodi Sundowns receive Thapelo Maseko enquiry

The 21-year-old is now the subject of a potential transfer to Europe, but only if Sundowns are open to discussions over a move when the registration window opens at the end of the season.

Maseko joined The Brazilians from their crosstown rivals SuperSport United for a figure reported to be well over R10-million two seasons ago and was immediately an important player under then-coach Rulani Mokwena.

His performances not only earned him a place in coach Hugo Broos’ squad when Bafana Bafana went to the Africa Cup of Nations where they got a bronze medal, but Maseko was also voted Player of the Tournament in the inaugural African Football League in November 2023.

Sundowns won the race for his signature despite SuperSport United having had interest from Belgian top-flight outfit KV Westerlo.

Matsatsantsa were also approached by other European teams to invite Maseko for an assessment with an intent to buy the player if he impresses, but instead, SuperSport opted to sell him to their Betway Premiership rivals.

The Cyprus league would give Maseko an opportunity to play in the UEFA Europa League like his Bafana teammate and winger Mihlali Mayambela, who has been on the books of Aris Limassol since 2022.

SABC Sport understands an enquiry has been sent to Sundowns to decide whether they are open to holding talks over a possible move, but nothing formal has been agreed at this stage between all the parties involved.

Maseko has surprisingly only made 12 appearances so far this season and, at times, even had to feature in the DStv Diski Challenge reserve league to keep fit.

Despite a fiery spell from Pat Cummins, who claimed 3 for 19, the weather had the final say - leaving the Sunrisers stranded outside the playoff zone.

After Hyderabad's bowlers turned in a dominant performance to restrict Delhi to a modest 133 for 7, the skies opened up just before the chase could begin. Nearly two hours later, with puddles still scattered across the outfield, officials had no choice but to call it off, awarding both teams a single point. Cummins and Delhi skipper Axar Patel shook hands, knowing one team had been dealt a crueller blow.

The no-result officially eliminated last year's runners-up from playoff contention, capping a season marred by inconsistency. Hyderabad now join Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals on the outside looking in.

For Delhi, however, the dream lives on. The Capitals, still chasing their elusive first IPL title, cling to fifth place and remain in the hunt for a coveted top-four finish.

Cummins' effort had sparked early drama, as he struck on the very first delivery of the match and went on to dismantle Delhi's top order. His victims included Karun Nair (out for a golden duck), Faf du Plessis (3), and Abishek Porel (8), leaving Delhi gasping at 62 for 6.

But a spirited 66-run stand between Ashutosh Sharma and Tristan Stubbs gave the Capitals something to bowl at. Both batters scored gritty 41s, with Ashutosh showcasing explosive intent with three sixes and two fours in his 26-ball stay before falling in the final over. Stubbs added a late flourish, but their effort ultimately faded into irrelevance under the dark clouds.

This marks only the second rain-ruined fixture of the season, but for Hyderabad, it was the one that ended their journey.

The outcome was especially frustrating for head coach Daniel Vettori, who lamented how the team had finally begun to piece together a well-rounded performance - only for the rain to halt it.

"Obviously, it's disappointing. We came in with high hopes, but we haven't been consistent enough with our performances," Vettori said after the match. "I've spoken to you guys a number of times around just not being able to put complete performances together. Today was the start of a complete performance, so it's frustrating that we couldn't finish it - but that's cricket."

Vettori also highlighted another challenge - the conditions in Hyderabad this season. Pitches hadn't played as expected, complicating matters for the Sunrisers' batting unit, which has been heavily reliant on a few standout players.

"This is like the theme of the IPL - isn't it? - give us the wicket we want," Vettori joked. "But I think you have to be able to adjust to the conditions. We have said that all year, all IPL, and the best teams have done that. It's been built around the personnel who can control the middle overs."

He singled out players like Heinrich Klaasen, Ishan Kishan, and Abhishek Sharma, noting their occasional brilliance but also how bowlers have adapted to them.

"(Heinrich) Klaasen has struck and struck alright. Ishan and Abhishek had those big hundreds, but bowlers also work out what they need to do against batters like that," he explained. "And I think the more exposure they've been getting, the more they have an idea of how to bowl to them. And I think being conditions-dependent, they (SRH batters) didn't make those adjustments as well."

Fully fit Stormers backline set to make Damian Willemse's 100th cap extra special

Willemse recently returned from back-to-back groin and finger injuries that kept him out of action for several months, while other Springbok stars like Manie Libbok and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu were also stuck on the sidelines.

But Feinberg-Mngomezulu has since made a spectacular return to full fitness while Libbok will also be back for this weekend's clash after a lengthy absence, and having all his teammates back for his 100th cap makes it an extra special occasion for Willemse.

"It's amazing. A special occasion for me to bring up the 100th," he told the press on Monday. "I've got to give thanks to the coaches, giving me that responsibility, and trusting me. And the players.

"They all helped shape me, and made me the player that I am today and not just on the field, but off the field as well; for calling me out if I'm not working hard enough, or I'm flying a little bit too high.

"I think it's pretty incredible for us as well... I don't think there's been a time in recent history that we've all been fit and ready to play together.

"It's always been myself injured, or Manie was injured now, or recently Sacha. But now, all of us are healthy and ready to play.

"We've been coming up with nice plays, and I think it came through nicely in the Benetton game. Yeah, so I'm just looking forward to it, [but] there's still a lot to come."

Of course, the Stormers backline is made up of more than just their Springbok stars, as Willemse was quick to point out.

"For a guy like me, having Warrick [Gelant] who can distribute and also make the play, [Seabelo] Senatla, Ben Loader on the wing who can also finish, and Sacha has been outstanding the last few weeks, he's just going to grow from strength to strength," he added.

Being stuck on the sidelines for the better part of five months has not been easy for Willemse, but it's given him some time to reflect on his career up to this point.

"It's obviously given me a nice reality check, being out of the game for a while," he said.

"On the other side, it's also just appreciating and not taking the opportunity to play rugby for granted... being able to physically do certain things within my skill set. With a groin injury, it limits you sometimes kicking or stepping."

Since his return, Willemse has been selected in three separate positions, featuring at flyhalf, centre and fullback, but he insists he's always happy to help out wherever he's needed in the Stormers backline.

"Look, for us, it's not really the number you wear or position you're playing; we try to put ourselves in situations and scenarios that's going to cover whatever we think [is important], based on analysis for the weekend," he said.

"If we do get ourselves in certain positions and scenarios, we are able to adapt. We've got the coaches helping us identify certain stuff and we need to take that on and make the decision as a group and as individuals, and basically sign it off."

Like everyone else, Willemse has been marveling at the exploits of teammate Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who has caught the eye with a couple of spectacular performances since returning from injury.

"He is a brilliant player, he has stepped up and played really well for us and put us in a very good position, especially in the Benetton game with some of his kicks and the tries that he set up," he said.

"Almost that wild card, pulling something out of the hat that we really needed and that puts teams under pressure. We just need him to keep on doing what he's doing at the moment."

While this weekend's clash against the Dragons is sure to be a special occasion for Willemse, he hasn't lost sight of the main goal - ensuring the Stormers win the game as they target the best possible finish to the URC season.

"At the end of the day, a special occasion is cool but the first priority is to win the game and go out this weekend and make ourselves and our fans proud," he said.

Emma Raducanu 'working on feeling a bit more comfortable' playing on clay

Raducanu has made no secret of her discomfort on clay courts and she pulled out of playing in qualifying for last year's French Open as she focused on preparing to play on grass court in her British homeland instead.

Now she is showing more eagerness to play on clay and after picking up a win at the Madrid Open and turning in a battling performance despite a defeat against Marta Kostyuk in her second match.

Raducanu told Sky Sports Tennis: "I want to work on doing things differently to try and bridge the gap between where I am now and where I want to be.

"I'm going to use the season to take pressure off, try and be more aggressive and play the way I want to more so, so it can help me on the other surfaces.

"I had some time off after Madrid and I'm working on feeling a bit more comfortable on this surface. I don't think I'm fully there yet, but I'm just putting in the hard work and keeping going.

"It's a good challenge for my game. I want to try and bridge the gap from where I am now to where I want to be.

"I just want to use this season to take the pressure off and play the way I want to so it can help me on the other surfaces.

"It is exciting, it does feel like a bit of a fresh start with the way I am approaching everything, with the people I have around, with my mindset and outlook."

Raducanu is back in the world's top 50 after her positive performances in Madrid and she has a chance to go higher if she can win matches at the WTA 1000 event in Rome this week and then at the French Open later this month.

Momoh Kamara is ready to lead the charge against Amajita

The former Mattia FC attacker is already a tournament-leading goal scorer with three goals and speaks about his rise in this tournament, with back-to-back man-of-the-match awards.

"There has been a lot of happiness in the camp, and we can feel the support of Sierra Leone behind us.

"It has taken quite a lot for me to be here. My mentality has forced me to work hard and remain determined, but we have to keep giving our best so our people can be more and more proud of us," said Kamara.

Before coming to this tournament, and after finishing as the top goal scorer and player of the tournament in the WAFU A region, Kamara was signed by Minnesota United in the Major League Soccer (MLS). Having been in Portugal before, Kamara feels that this is a good decision for him.

"I think the switch to Minnesota was a good move for me, and anything that comes from this move is only going to be positive for me as well," said the young sensation.

The 19-year-old scored a hat-trick against Egypt in this tournament and is already capped with the senior team, having recently played in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier games against Guinea-Bissau and Egypt.

He sees Amajita as a very special team that they will not be underestimating.

"South Africa is a very strong side. We watched their games against Egypt and Tanzania, and we know that they are a very good team.

"That said, we are well organised and well prepared for our match against them, so we will see what will happen," said Kamara confidently.

"I think the break was much needed, it afforded us recovery time and good breathing space.

"We utilised the time we had to prepare the boys technically, tactically, and physically, although mostly tactically. We've also brought back intense conditioning, because in these games here in Egypt, you need fit players and characters as well," explained the optimistic coach.

Mdaka has also been regularly watching Group A matches, including the last two games of Sierra Leone, and he believes that he’s gathered enough information on his opponents.

"We have explored the key areas of this match, and we have identified the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition, but at the same time, we are not changing our style and approach," concluded Mdaka.

Currently in ninth position in the Betway Premiership, and at real risk of again missing out on next season’s MTN8, Miguel says the responsibility is not only on the coach, but on the players too.

“It’s not only the coach that is under pressure; it’s also the players and that’s what people have to understand. The coach doesn’t play, we play. We are the ones that make mistakes, we are the ones that give you victory,” Miguel said.

“So, I think the pressure should be shared by the coach, by the players. We have to take that responsibility also, it’s not only because the coach made a bad decision or because the coach made a good decision. No it’s us, the players also and that comes for the senior players as me, as Sirino [Gaston] as all these players, we have to take that responsibility.

“I take it, no problem, I take responsibility of a bad season. Not only the coach, you have to understand, it’s a new season for the coach. It’s a new process, it’s new things to teach to the players to try to make us understand what’s the way for him to play.

“As I said, it’s a process, we have to be patient also, expecting that we can make something different, but the most important thing is to believe in the process.”

So, it was a heavy load on them as they are trying to adjust to the system and I believe it's still early already with the tough matches that we've already played,” Mafene said.

“I think we can only be better for the second round because you see certain combinations now are playing out in a manner that we anticipated. So, I think it's only fair to give the players time to at least cool it down a bit and try to understand certain things about the system or formation, but so far, so good."

Fort Hare Ladies managed to challenge the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns to a tight contest at Tuks Stadium on Sunday, to end up with a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Coach Mafene shares his match analysis.

"Our approach was just clear that we didn't want to drop many points but I would settle for a draw. The game was open for everyone who can be able to capitilise on that because we missed more chances first half, that's when we realised that if we impose more threats on them and we don't allow them to play we'll manage to capitilise and get in some break attacks and some few chances which we couldn't convert,” he added.

“Then later on we realised that they also didn't wanna give us the chance to play the ball at the back and then we decided to get them on counterattacks and break attacks."

South Africa endured a slow start in the 50-overs series, with back-to-back defeats against India in the opening match and against Sri Lanka last Friday.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Luus says they expect lots of spin considering the hot and humid conditions at the R. Premadasa International Stadium.

“India is a very strong team and we know they play hard. We are going to have to be on top of our game to beat them. We expect lots of spin in these conditions and the very hot weather will also play a part,’’ said Luus.

Despite defeat to India by 15 runs in the opening match, Luus believes the team has great potential to hold their own against India and only need to put them under pressure from the get go to help seal a win.

“There were so many positives. I think if we put India under pressure, then we have a great chance of beating them. They are a well balanced team, but so are we and we have all the talent and skill required to beat them,” added Luus.

Kagiso Rabada cleared to resume playing after completing 'substance abuse treatment program'

SAIDS issued a statement confirming that Rabada had completed a "substance abuse treatment program" after failing the doping test on 21 January but was only notified of the result on 1 April.

The paceman then subsequently left his IPL side, Gujarat Titans, on 3 April after playing two matches in the tournament but has now returned to India.

The statement from SAIDS said: "Mr. Rabada tested positive for a Substance of Abuse and was subsequently notified of the allegation of his doping offence on 1 April 2025. A provisional suspension was imposed and Mr. Rabada returned immediately to South Africa from India.

"The player accepted responsibility for the doping offence and honoured his provisional suspension.

"As per the South African Anti-Doping Rules specifically pertaining to Substances of Abuse, the player was offered an opportunity to complete a substance abuse treatment program.

"After Mr. Rabada satisfactorily completed two sessions of his treatment program, his provisional suspension ended. The player has effectively served a one-month period of ineligibility and may now resume participation in sport."

The 29-year-old issued an apology through the South African Cricketers' Association (SACA) after confirming his suspension.

He wrote: "I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations.

"I am serving a provisional suspension and I am looking forward to returning to the game I love playing.

"I couldn't have gone through this alone. I'd like to thank my agent, CSA, and Gujarat Titans for their support. I'd also like to thank SACA and my legal team for their guidance and counsel. Most importantly I'd like to thank my friends and family for their understanding and love.

The SA U20s managed to beat Argentina in the opening round on Thursday, while Australia forced a late draw against New Zealand, scoring the equalising try after the hooter had sounded.

Foote has handed starts to JC Mars, Wandile Mlaba, Batho Hlekani and Herman Lubbe, all of whom played for the Junior Boks last year.

The SA U20 coach said it is important to keep their momentum going, manage the load of the players whilst also building squad depth by giving the players exposure to top-class international rugby.

Regarding the team and their prospects of playing Australia, who will be highly motivated to register their first win, Foote said he is happy with the balance of the squad.

"It's a nice match-23 with lots of exciting players and speed amongst the backs, complemented by a big and physical forward pack, and we are looking forward to the game," said Foote.

"We see Australia as a massive threat with their ball movement and how they play with width, and we expect they will have some special structured set pieces with lineouts and scrums.

AFCON U20 rocked by age cheating allegations

The U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, currently underway in Egypt, has been rocked by allegations of age cheating.

The Tanzanian team had just lost to Sierra Leone 1-0 in Ismailia, and the West Africans, making their debut in the tournament, became the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals.

"These are local players, most of them are playing the second division or the first division. Even this team, Sierra Leone, if you see them, they are a bit bigger and age-wise it's not under 20 if you see but we put more effort now to build up this youth program so that in the future we come up with a good and strong side," Mkwasa said.

Age cheating in African football has long been a serious concern, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) look to have won the fight when they introduced the MRI scans.

But this can only work up to the U17 boys’ level and not beyond that.

Zambia U20 head coach Boyd Mulandwa says the cancer of age cheating can be damaging to the game and the players.

"But on our side, it's just to encourage the boys to keep fighting. It's a youth tournament, we expect youth to be playing against youth, but if you bring people who are not in that category, it becomes difficult for others,” Mulandwa said.

“The others just get intimidated by just looking at someone, they can tell that this guy is older than me, and it's gonna be difficult for me to challenge him."

The semifinalists at this U20 AFCON qualify for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile in September this year.

Amajita play Sierra Leone, in their next game on Tuesday.

But it’s not just Sierra Leone that is suspected or accused of age cheating in this tournament.

Tanzania also have registered three players, who have confirmed ages on other relevant platforms.

Two players appeared on the Tanzanian league as 22-year-olds and another one as a 23year-old, but they have been registered as U20 players in this tournament.

Mulandwa says the biggest challenge is that age cheating is difficult to prove in some instances.

"But for the boys to develop their careers. The age, some of them, when you look at them, they don't look to be under 20, but there's nothing that we can do because we are not the ones who have produced those documents from their parents. Their parents are in a good position to say these guys are 20 or not,” Mulandwa added.

"This team delivered an amazing performance over the weekend," said Snyman.

"The players deserve so much credit for the way they played here in Los Angeles. We had some good parts and some bad parts to our season, but this weekend we got it all together and that is a very satisfying feeling.

"Any coach will tell you that your plan can only be as good as the buy-in from the players and then their execution thereof. This weekend it all come together.

"They really stuck to our plan, but also importantly, played the moments when it was there to exploit. They did some exceptional things on the field during this tournament and all the credit must go to them.

"Some of those moments of brilliance by the players in the final made this a special win."

Snyman said the weekend proved that the Blitzboks are back to where they should be: "This performance was proof of the potential of this squad. "Difficult game, it's a team that we know that if you go behind and you chase, then you've got a problem, you know. We try and stay in the game; the instruction is to try and stay in the game as long as possible and then maybe take some more risks in the second half, but then we concede a goal,” he added.

“We tried and played them offside, half their line steps up, the other line stays back and the guys stay on side and scores a goal and from that minute on it becomes very difficult to chase Sundowns, even at home.

A 19-5 victory over Spain in the final wrapped up a flawless weekend in California for the South Africans.

The Blitzboks were determined on defence and clinical on attack against a plucky Spain to win their second title of the 2025 season, after raising the trophy in Cape Town in December 2024.

They managed to keep Spain away from their tryline with solid defence and when in possession, struck when it mattered, and even managed to score when down to six men following a late yellow card to Zander Reynders.

The performance in the final wrapped up a magnificent effort at the tournament, where the Blitzboks had no peers and hard as Spain tried, they had no answers to unlock the determination of their opponents to not let them get past them.

After four minutes of defence, South Africa struck when Selvyn Davids, who was named Player of the Final, stepped past the Spanish defence for a brilliant solo try.

A long spell of possession by Spain was left in ruins as - from a rare moment with ball in hand at that stage - Davids attacked from a scrum 80m out and ran almost the length of the field. Ronald Brown converted for a 7-0 lead, which was the halftime score as well.

Relentless defence forced Spain into mistakes and they battled to get into the South African half bar their early attack in the opening spell.

The second half had more of the same. Spain had most of the ball and attacked from all corners, but stout defence forced them backwards and into mistakes.

They were finally rewarded when Quewin Nortje was beaten by a delayed pass and Pol Pla scored from 50m out. Davids cut the Spanish speedster off, forced him to score out wide, and the conversion missed, keeping South Africa in the lead.

The turning point came soon after when Mfundo Ndhlovu, who last played in Cape Town in December, outfoxed a rushing defence and then raced away from inside the SA 22 to score. Brown converted and at 14-5 and two minutes to play, the advantage was with the Blitzboks.

Reynders caused some heartache was he was yellow carded from the restart, leaving the team one man short for the remainder of the match, but that didn't matter. Siviwe Soyizwapi showed his experience with a crucial turnover, with his team under pressure and a man down, which handed possession back to SA.

Ricardo Duarttee sealed the deal after close combat with the Spanish and a probing Tristan Leyds run found some gaps and momentum from where Duarttee pounced.

Blitzbok coach Philip Snyman praised the players afterwards, saying that their willingness to keep working made the win possible.

Earlier, the Blitzboks kept their hot streak going following pool wins against France, Great Britain and Argentina, outscoring New Zealand by four tries to one and never giving the Kiwi side a look-in at all with a 26-5 win in their semi-final.

Shilton van Wyk opened the scoring in the first minute, pouncing on a loose pass from New Zealand after a lineout, kicking ahead and winning the race to the line. Ronald Brown converted for a 7-0 lead.

The second try by South Africa was more structured but still a thing of beauty. Selvyn Davids delayed his pass from a tap penalty and Nortje could race in to score under the sticks. Brown converted and the lead was 14-0 after four minutes of play.

The rampant Blitzboks scored a third try before the half-time buzzer when some crisp passing and hard running gave Van Wyk a second try in the opening seven minutes. Brown, whose pass freed up Van Wyk, converted from the sideline for a 21-0 lead.

The second half start was equally impressive. Brown's spot-on cross-kick found Nortje in the corner for his second try, despite having his shirt ripped in two, to push the lead to 26-0.

New Zealand finally managed a play of note three minutes into the second half with a good move from within their half to score, but it was too little, too late.

The close 17-14 defeat in the play-off means the Bok Women Sevens will have to revert to the regional route to qualify for the new second-tier competition next season, with China, Brazil, Argentina and Spain progressing from the LA tournament.

South Africa still held a 14-10 lead with a minute left on the clock, but with a one-player advantage after Alicia Willemse was red-carded for a dangerous tackle, Kenya scored to seal a third win over their African foes this season.

The match started well for the Bok Women. A dropped ball by Kenya two minutes in resulted in Nadine Roos scoring a runaway try and her conversion handed them a 7-0 lead.

Kenya responded well and scored from a turnover for their first points of the match, courtesy of a try by Freshia Oduor. The conversion was wide and that kept the SA side in the lead, but that changed when the East Africans went ahead on the scoreboard just before the break though when Sharon Auma scored for a 10-7 lead.

A yellow card to Kenya after a high tackle to Simamkele Namba handed SA a chance to take the lead back, but a poor pass to Maria Tshiremba cancelled the advantage of having an extra player on attack.

The second half effort to use the extra player worked better with Shiniqwa Lamprecht being put in space with some crisp passing and running hard for their second try and the lead. Roos converted for a 14-10 lead.

With Willemse red-carded, a South African player motionless on the pitch and with two minutes to play, Kenya had the numbers and the aces, as Oduor stepped inside her defender to score in the final minute of play.

The Bok Women had one more attacking opportunity from the restart, but a forward pass ended the trip to LA for them.

Earlier on Sunday, the South Africans showed massive resilience to fight back for a well-deserved 17-14 victory (half-time 7-7) over Argentina in their final pool match.

A strong start by the Bok Women, pushing Argentina back with some strong defence, saw Ayanda Malinga cross for the first try of the match, but thereafter they lost their way a bit, conceding a string of penalties - and a yellow card to Zandile Masuku - to allow the South Americans back into the match.

With Masuku off the field, Sofia Gonzalez and Maria Taladrid scored on either side of the break to take a 14-7 lead, and the Bok Women looked a bit rattled as they were stuck in their own half of the field.

With Argentina hot on the attack, Nadine Roos forced a turnover in the SA 22 and sent Maria Tshiremba away for a try 85m downfield to make it a two-point game.

From the restart, the South Africans applied massive pressure and after a few penalties against Argentina, Leigh Fortuin finally crashed over for the winning try more than a minute after the full-time buzzer had sounded.

Chiefs ended the first half strongly and nearly regained the lead in injury time before the break, but Yusuf Maart’s cross was denied by goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to keep the score level.

Riveiro says they needed to gain more control and keep calm heading into the second half.

"Luckily, we managed to equalise, it was very important to neutralise the lead soon in the first half. I had a feeling that we finished the first half already better than Chiefs but still just before half-time they had a really good chance to get the lead again,” the coach added.

“The game could have changed in that moment as well but I think in the second half we were close to the football that we've been playing this season and that gave us the proper control, more chances created and the possibility to score a second goal in transitions and also against Chiefs, pressure to create at least three, four good chances to get a little bit more of an advantage.

“And defending I think, defending very well. I don't remember any intervention from Chaine in the last part of the game, with Chiefs chasing that one goal, that means that we were defending solid, well."

"I ran well today, and I'm pleased with my performance—it's exactly what I had planned for the competition. Overall, I'm satisfied," said Kavanagh.

“It’s my first race in a while, so I wanted to post a decent time that I can build on in the coming months. Overall, I’m satisfied with how I ran today.”

Kavanagh says competing in a race of this calibre in her hometown is helping her raise her performance.

“We’re really grateful to have events like this in Durban. Today’s race was well organised, and I have no complaints—the weather was perfect, and the support on the course was excellent, with water and everything we needed along the route. Zimbabwe’s Godwin Katarurak followed closely in second place with a time of 2:11:02, earning R40,000.

Although Katarurak finished second, he also triumphed in the Southern Region Marathon Championships, which was part of the Durban International Marathon.

Zimbabwe’s Blessing Waison secured third place in 2:11:51, while Tumelo Motlagale became the first South African to finish, taking fourth in 2:12:42.

Despite strong efforts, local runners struggled to match the pace of the Kenyan and Ethiopian competitors on the day.

The race took place in perfect weather conditions, with no wind to trouble the athletes.

Kirui, a specialist in the 5000m and 10,000m events, led from the front and delivered a dominant performance to claim his first victory. “I feel great, and I thank God for this day,” he said.

“Three months ago, I was battling a tendon injury and feared the worst. I focused on my recovery, and today I’m proud to have come through it and won a big prize.”

Struggling with an injury, he was worried the chasing pack might close the gap.

Despite running solo for much of the race and setting the pace early on, he never truly felt at ease.

“Yes, that’s true — I was concerned they would catch me,” he admitted.

“It was a tough race, and I only started to believe I could win at around 40km. I was feeling tired, and the pacemaker’s speed wasn’t quite fast enough for me.”

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Emane Seifu Hayile claimed victory in the women’s race with a time of 2:31:45.

She was closely followed by Namibia’s Alina Armas, who finished second in 2:32:34, while Zimbabwe’s Fortunate Chidzivo secured third place with a personal best of 2:33:30.

“I’m really happy with the win,” said Hayile after crossing the finish line.

“I want to thank God for allowing me to run in such beautiful weather. I managed to run a personal best, and that means a lot to me. I’ll talk to my team about plans for the next race, but for now, I’m exhausted and overjoyed with this result.”

"I'm super happy that we were able to improve my game in, honestly, in everything, the movement, my touch game is much better right now. Ã¢¦Kind of like trying to come to the net, I'm not sure if it's really successful so far, but I'm trying," she said.

"I hate losing a lot, and especially in finals, because it's like you're so close," the American stated. "I do get ready for these matches and, yeah, I credit it to just how much I hate losing.

Retired Bok prop Steven Kitshoff claps back at Matt Williams

Williams caused a stir last month when he insinuated that Kitshoff's life-threatening neck injury was a result of South Africa's Bomb Squad tactics of forward-heavy benches.

The former Scotland and Leinster head coach has been incredibly outspoken about the tactic that he believes 'discriminates against backline players' and is a major safety concern.

He has called for World Rugby to change the laws around the use of the bench as he believes that the 7-1 and 6-2 splits in favour of the forwards lead to more injuries.

World Rugby have conducted scientific and medical research on the impact of fresh players entering a match against fatigued players and have come to the conclusion that there is no scientific evidence to alter the laws around the bench and how it is used.

However, that has not stopped Williams, who states that he will not 'shut up about it' and in a recent interview speculated that Kitshoff's injury that he sustained while playing in the Currie Cup for Western Province was a result of the Bomb Squad tactics and South Africa's heavy scrum focus.

"This is going to fundamentally change the way the game is being played," Williams told DSPN with Martin Devlin. "People say at the top level, 'we like big dudes running at big dudes, that's cool', but what's it doing to the guys heads?"

"We know about brain injuries, what is it doing for brain injuries by bringing fresh guys off the bench? What's it doing to the guys spines when it's being compacted unbelievably for 80 minutes?

"What about Kitshoff, what happened to his spine in South Africa? Do we know if that is as a result of the scrummaging they are put through?"

Ex-Springboks captain Jean de Villiers raised Williams' remarks on the Boks Office, where he was joined by Kitshoff and former Bok head coach Nick Mallett.

"There was another spat online by our big mate Mr Matt Williams, again just talking about how unfair the 7-1 split is and it's not in the ethos of rugby etc, etc. Having a go at Rassie as well, and then Rassie actually said, 'No, you know you don't have your facts right here, because he also said that your [Kitshoff] injury comes down to the 7-1 split," De Villiers said.

"There's certainly a bit of ignorance with those comments"

Kitshoff remarked: "It doesn't make sense."

Before Mallett interjected, adding: "Illogical. Presumably, he was a backline player, and he is Australian, so an Australian backline player is not a good start. First of all, the comments should be made to World Rugby, if he's got comments to make.

"He has done it as a pundit, just like we're sitting here talking, you've got every right to your opinion but if you want to change it's World Rugby who can change it and World Rugby have done a medical assessment on whether seven forwards coming on in the second half brings on numerous injuries and it doesn't absolutely not there's no evidence whatsoever.

"But they can do it [the opposition] too, they can match you if they want to match you, the problem is other teams apart from France don't have the quality and depth that we have.

"So I would say that the frustration for players and someone like Matt Williams is he thinks it is unfair that a country has such strength and depth in this position where our second forwards coming onto the field are stronger than the first that they put on and their reserves are appreciably worse than their first guys so it does make a very big difference. But that isn't something that he can change, that's World Rugby who has to decide whether they need to change that or not."

De Villiers continued: "His comment were saying that you got injured because you were part of the Bomb Squad but the game that you played in you were not, you were starting for Western Province in that game in a Currie Cup game and sometimes the risk lies potentially for the opposition if you come on but then to make comments like that it needs to be factually based that other players got injured because of these fresh guys coming on and make no mistake there's no one bigger in terms of player welfare and player safety in the game than me.

"I chair the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players' Fund and we want to make the game as safe as possible but comments like that are dangerous to the game."

Despite his career being cut short because of injury, Kitshoff believes that the Bomb Squad actually extends players' careers and allows them to get more back-to-back Test caps.

"If you think about the 2019 up to 2023 how many games did those two groups with the Bomb Squad in combination play together? I think it created so much depth in South African rugby, so much consistency because guys aren't being pushed up to 70-75 minutes, they know they're going to play 50 minutes and get subbed off," he explained.

"They get that extra 15-20 minutes of rest and then the other guys just play so you create a squad of forwards that has the ability to interchange at any moment in the game and it creates a lot of back-to-back caps because the guys aren't overworked, they don't get fatigued and tired and not being selected for the following weekend because of overplaying.

"I actually think healthwise or from a rugby wellness perspective, the Bomb Squad created a bit more longevity in players' careers."

"Longevity for the older players and experience for the younger players"Mallett agreed, stating that a player could sustain a serious injury at any given time whether it be on the pitch or in training.

The former Italy head coach added that the tactic also gives younger players more exposure at the international level while allowing the older players to extend their careers.

Additionally, he feels as though Williams' comments come from his experience of how the game used to be with fewer substitutes permitted and fatigue playing a much greater factor in matches.

"Longevity for the older players and experience for the younger players," he said. "But I mean you can injure your neck in a scrumming session at practice.

"Say the reserve Stormer's pack is up against Steven Kitsoff, Joseph Dweba and Frans Malherbe, presumably that's why someone like Neethling Fouche has improved as much because he had to scrum against you for five or six years so but even in those, they are very intense. You can injure yourself at any given time, so it's not injuries or forcing injuries on others that has been proven not to be the case.

"So it is just more about the philosophy of saying that in the old days, you used to tire out your opponent. Say as a prop, it takes you maybe 60 minutes to really get on top of your tighthead and you can maybe get two or three penalties in the last 20 minutes but suddenly they bring a fresh guy on it's more that sense that we've lost the traditional feel of the game but the other team can also put a fresh guy."

Miguel Cardoso gives update on striker Lebo Mothiba

The Brazilians have thrown the former Strasbourg striker a lifeline, taking him on board as a free agent following long spells on sidelines after surgery and injuries while in France.

"I really hope so because Mothiba is a quality player, high quality player that comes from a long period of absence, of no competition, a big injury and a long period of recovery,” Cardoso said.

The loss has exposed the Gunners' growing fragility ahead of their semi-final showdown with Paris Saint-Germain.

Some expected Arteta to rest key players, but after three poor Premier League performances in their last four, the starting XI was no real surprise.

Jurrien Timber was rested, with Ben White coming in and Thomas Partey returning from the European suspension that proved so costly against PSG. Partey's inclusion pushed Mikel Merino to the bench, while Leandro Trossard kept his place up front.

Risking injuries to Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Partey concerned a few fans. Rice came through unscathed and got his confidence-boosting goal, while Partey desperately needed minutes.

Arsenal needed a strong performance ahead of PSG, but failed to deliver, despite taking the lead through Rice. He had a couple of early efforts before the best chance of the opening 25 minutes fell to Evanilson, who somehow found acres of space eight yards out to meet Milos Kerkez's whipped cross. Jakub Kiwior was on the ground for reasons best known to him.

A smart Kepa save denied Trossard before Arsenal hearts were briefly in mouths as Saliba slid in to deny Dango Ouattara a huge chance. Thankfully, he got enough of the ball, and soon after, Arsenal were in front.

Rice, on his 100th Arsenal appearance, scored the opener. Martin Odegaard desperately needed a lift after a horror show against PSG, and delivered with an inch-perfect ball. Kepa came and Rice rounded him before hitting the target, despite Illia Zabarnyi's efforts.

Evanilson could feasibly have had a first-half hat-trick. One header looped onto the roof of the net and another huge chance came when Raya's wayward pass intended for Odegaard gifted him an opening. The Brazilian dinked it over the bar with Raya scrambling.

Ouattara was giving White the run-around at one point, but it was the Arsenal players who looked like gifting Bournemouth an equaliser. Raya's risky passing and Saliba letting a simple ball roll under his foot were red flags before a goal came.

This was an Arsenal team flirting with danger, and the sight of Antoine Semenyo coming on wasn't exactly comforting for White, especially.

Semenyo's impact was instant - but not in the way anyone expected. His long throw caused chaos, and reported Arsenal transfer target Dean Huijsen nodded the ball beyond Raya in front of the away end.

Arsenal looked flat after the equaliser, and Bournemouth took control. If there was going to be a winner, it felt like it was coming from the visitors.

Sure enough, the Cherries struck again from a set-piece. Marcus Tavernier's header found Evanilson at the back post, and he outmuscled Odegaard - who offered little resistance. VAR checked for handball, but nothing was given.

Odegaard's confidence looks shot, and while his assist was inch-perfect, it won't erase the image of him being shrugged aside by Evanilson for the winner. Aside from that goal contribution, it was another poor showing from an Arsenal captain who's setting the standard - but not in the way you're supposed to.

For some reason only he knows, Arteta waited until the 86th minute to introduce Ethan Nwaneri - just as he waited until injury time to bring him on against PSG. The teenager came on alongside Raheem Sterling and Oleksandr Zinchenko, replacing Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Ben White - three players who'll be fit for Wednesday in Paris, but hardly brimming with confidence.

Ultimately, Arteta had to choose between resting players or going strong to build momentum ahead of a season-defining clash with Luis Enrique's PSG. He chose the latter, but the gamble didn't pay off.

There are valuable minutes in the legs, sure - but instead of gaining confidence, rhythm, and momentum, these Arsenal players will head to the French capital feeling sorry for themselves and possibly fearing another defeat.

Odegaard's form is genuinely alarming. And honestly, if Arteta drops him against PSG, there won't be a single Arsenal fan questioning the decision. He's miles off it - and that's a big reason why Arsenal are, too.

They look bereft of ideas in the final third and, despite supposedly shaking the 'soft touch' tag, look worryingly fragile at the back. Conceding twice from set-pieces is nothing short of a shambles - and it's starting to creep back in as their Achilles' heel.

Andoni Iraola took advantage of Arsenal's frailties to become the first Bournemouth manager to win at the Emirates and complete a Premier League double over them.

Managers across the league are now fully aware of Arsenal's frailties - coming back from a losing position against them is no longer a daunting task.

Saturday's 2-1 defeat to the Cherries is the tenth time they have dropped points from a winning position this season, and the first time they've lost after leading. That's 21 points dropped in total - only Spurs, Fulham, Ipswich, and Southampton have more.

With three league games remaining, Arsenal will only be two points above Newcastle United if they beat Brighton on Sunday. We now live in a world where they could be sweating over a top-five finish.

If PSG knock them out of the Champions League, Arsenal might at least be able to refocus domestically. But with a trip to Anfield next, followed by a home clash with Newcastle, the timing couldn't be worse with their current form.

Arteta can't even use the rotation excuse after losing to Bournemouth, and these players need to step up drastically in Paris. Having shown their mettle against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, you can't write them off just yet. But we wouldn't blame you if you did.

Kevin de Bruyne strike edges Man City past Wolves to keep Champions League push alive

Against Argentina, Ronald Brown struck first for a 7-0 scoreline, but two quick tries by the Pumas pushed them into the lead. Ryan Oosthuizen scored to level matters at the break, with Ricardo Duarttee converting both tries.

Three unanswered tries by the Blitzboks gave them an impressive 29-14 lead before a late try by Argentina saved them some blushes. The South Americans will face Spain in the other semi-final.

After an impressive performance against France, South Africa were on the money again against Great Britain, with two tries within the first five minutes putting them into the fast lane towards victory.

First, Brown kicked ahead in the opening minute of play, regathered and scored for a 7-0 lead before Shilton van Wyk chased down his own kick as well to score his 50th HSBC SVNS try.

Leading 12-0, the Blitzboks were in cruise control, but then stepped off the gas, allowing their opponents to claw their way back into the match. Freddie Roddick scored on the buzzer for a converted try, giving the UK side something of a sniff in the second half.

The second half remained scoreless, but went from one side to the other as both sides had their moments, but could not convert. Some good scrambling defence by the Blitzboks proved vital as they held out their opponents to secure their second win of the day.

In the first match, the French started very well and pressured the Blitzboks into mistakes, which led to two unanswered tries - by Varian Pasquet and Simon DÃƒ©sert - to give them a 10-point lead.

The Blitzboks knuckled down and showed great character to fight back after going down 10-0 late in the first half. Selvyn Davids' late try before the break, from a great grubber into space, meant the teams swapped sides with France leading by 10-7.

The second half belonged to the Blitzboks, who held onto possession much better as they worked to find space, with Shilton van Wyk and Zain Davids adding their names to the score sheet.

Van Wyk circled the French defence on the right wing before Zain Davids ran the perfect angle onto a short pass into space by Ricardo Duarttee to give the Blitzboks a nine-point lead. France lost a player to the sin bin and the game finished as the South Africans showed some real grit on defence to deny their opponents a losing bonus-point.

The Blitzboks' semi-final against New Zealand is at 22h46 (SA time) on Sunday evening, shortly after Spain and Argentina face off at at 22h24 for a place in the final.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi inspires Junior Boks with visit

The Junior Boks returned to the training field on Saturday following their victory over Argentina in the opening round of the Under-20 Rugby Championship held in Gqeberha.

Kolisi, who hails from the Eastern Cape, is visiting his hometown and made a surprise appearance at the Junior Boks' field session.

"It's amazing to see the boys and good to be in Gqeberha, where people are so hungry for rugby and to see our boys play," said Kolisi.

"I can see they and the coaches are working hard, they have a great culture and I can see the future of our rugby is in good hands."

Kolisi was quite amazed at the size of some of the players: "The size of these boys, it's ridiculous compared to me," he quipped.

When asked what he said to them, Kolisi replied: "I just wished them luck and told them that, at this young age, it's a huge privilege. They represent all of us in South Africa right now; this is their opportunity, and they must use it well. They are representing not just some people, but the whole of the country.

"They must enjoy the moment because the opportunity can be taken away just like that. I also told them to dream bigger than what is happening on the field - this is not the end for them, they want to kick on to the highest level."

After nearly 9000 people attended the Junior Boks' opening game on Thursday, Kolisi also had a special message for the rugby supporters in the Eastern Cape city, where the Boks will face Italy in July.

"I know I don't have to urge the rugby supporters in Gqeberha to come and support the tournament and our boys," said the Bok captain.

"I know they are going to attend because this province is hungry for rugby and big events. That's why every time we come here it's always full and the people come to welcome us at the airport.

"I want to say thanks in advance to the people in Gqeberha for coming out to support the boys and filling out the stadium - you can see this province can host big events and hopefully more will come after this."

Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton said he and his teammates were extremely excited to see the two-time Rugby World Cup winning captain take time out of his busy schedule to come and attend their morning training session.

"Seeing Siya watch the training session and then his engagement with the squad and staff afterwards was a very special moment," said Norton. "He is our hero and we are grateful for the inspiring words he shared with us and we thoroughly enjoyed the special occasion."

Springbok Women's Sevens earn mixed bag of results on day one in Los Angeles

The South Africans started slowly at Dignity Health Sports Park against Ireland, but soon warmed to the challenge. A silly error in their red zone handed the Irish an easy converted try to make it 7-0 barely a minute into the Pool B fixture.

Credit to the South Africans though, who stayed calm and started to dominate their opponents with pressing defence and good game management, and it was no surprise when Ayanda Malinga raced 80m to score soon after.

The centre found an outside gap following a good scrum by her teammates and ran in to score under the sticks a minute before the break. Nadine Roos converted to level scores at half-time.

It was Roos who scored the next - and decisive try - for South Africa. Eleven minutes into the match and with both sides looking for the knock-out punch, a brilliant turn-over and pass from Zintle Mpupha gave Roos some real estate to cover and she raced away for a five-pointer 80m downfield.

Credit to Ireland, who kept on attacking, but they could not any gaps in the South African defence, who held out for the perfect start.

Unfortunately, things didn't work out quite the same against China, who were out of the blocks in no time and scored three converted first-half tries to take a commanding 21-0 lead into the break after a sluggish start by the South Africans, and despite a much improved second half, they could not overhaul their Asian opponents, who secured a semi-final spot on day two.

China had all the play in the first half of the match, with South Africa guilty of missed tackles, poor handling and average game management. The injury to team captain Mathrin Simmers, who was ruled out due to an HIA in the Ireland match, was telling as the Bok Women struggled to get into the match and their apathy in the first half proved critical.

The second half was much better, with speed on attack and more precise play with ball in hand, helped by the injection of Alicia Willemse into the game, handing them two tries, by Rights Mkhari and Leigh Fortuin, with the second five-pointer closing the gap to 21-12 with just over a minute to play. China responded well though and raced away for the final points of the match from the restart.

The Bok Women are still in the running for the semi-finals courtesy of their earlier victory over Ireland, and a win over Argentina on Sunday evening at 19h00 (SA time) will see them book a spot in the top four.

Sekhukhune United held to draw but climb back into top three

Sekhukhune United reclaimed third spot on the Betway Premiership table despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Magesi FC on Saturday evening.

Magesi struck early in the match, capitalising just three minutes after Kayden Rademeyer was forced off with injury in the 11th minute.

Full-back Delano Abrahams finished smartly from the right side of the six-yard box in the 14th minute to put the visitors ahead.

Sekhukhune responded with increasing pressure, and nearly equalised before the break. Tlou Masegela squandered a close-range chance following a pinpoint cross from John Mokone, while Elvis Chipezeze was called into action to deny Thabang Monare's powerful header. Monare was replaced at halftime by Lesedi Kapinga in a tactical switch.

Kagiso Rabada 'deeply sorry' after confirming provisional suspension

Proteas set to take on Zimbabwe in warm-up fixture ahead of WTC final

The fixture against their African neighbours will take place at Arundel in Sussex from 3-6 June with the final against Australia set to start on 11 June a Lord's.

Zimbabwe will remain in the United Kingdom after having played in an historic Test match against England that will begin on 22 May at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

It will be Zimbabwe's first appearance in a Test fixture on English soil in over two decades, the last such occasion having come in 2003.

The Proteas have not played a Test match since beating Pakistan by 10 wickets in the New Year's Test at Newlands in Cape Town in January.

The South Africans are nursing a few injuries ahead of next month's trip to England with captain Temba Bavuma and David Bedingham currently on the sidelines.

Bedingham's injury is more serious with the middle-order batter suffering a fractured toe last month while playing for English county side Durham in a first-class match against against Warwickshire.

Bavuma missed out on the South African domestic 4-Day in April, where he was due to line-up for the Lions against the Titans, because of an elbow injury.

The Proteas also have plenty of players involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the final of the tournament scheduled to take place on 25 May.

Nadine de Klerk reacts to Proteas Women milestone

Having made her debut back in 2017, de Klerk has amassed 43 matches so far for South Africa, and has best figures of 4/32 which came against Pakistan in 2023.

After removing India's Deepti Sharma for nine runs to claim the all-important milestone scalp, she says it meant a lot because it was harder to get in those conditions.

“I mean, you always want to contribute to the side and I guess as a bowler you love taking wickets. Especially if it’s not easy coming," said the 25-year-old.

"On these conditions wickets are really hard to come by, and yeah it’s been a great journey for me so far and hopefully it keeps getting better from here on."

De Klerk did, however, admit that the conditions they’ve played under so far are best suited to her game, despite having lost their opening two matches.

“I think these conditions suit me quite well. I’m the slowest of the ‘bomb squad’, so I try and keep it really easy. Keep it nice and tight and try to bowl to my field," she added.

"Sometimes you get really lucky and pick up a few wickets, and sometimes you have to craft really hard.”

She went on to speak about the hot conditions in Colombo, something the team has struggled with since their arrival there.

“It’s obviously extremely hot. I think also batting first and having to come out and field after lunch is never easy, especially in these conditions.

"We also didn’t have a lot of runs on the board, so we really had to put in a good shift today [against Sri-Lanka]. I think it’s hot, we know it’s hot and it’s not going to change.

"I guess it’s just about taking the learnings from these last two games, try and see how we can get better and adapt to the heat," concluded de Klerk.

Having first lost to the Indians by 15 runs and then to the host nation by 5 wickets, the Proteas Women will next be in action on Wednesday against the former, in their third match of the tri-series.

Morocco U20 coach acknowledges South Africa’s increasing football strength

From January 2024 until now, South African football has been on an upward trajectory. Bafana Bafana were bronze medalists at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte D’Ivoire, Amajimbos have qualified for the FIFA U17 World Cup, and Amajita are now competing in the AFCON U20 tournament.

"Congratulations to South Africa for having very good U17 and U20 national teams. The youth teams and some of the South African clubs are playing very well," said the Moroccan.

Meanwhile, Ouahbi, who is leading his country’s team in this tournament in Egypt, says King Mohammed VI has been instrumental in the success of Moroccan football.

The North African country is carrying African football today, hosting the next WAFCON tournament, the senior AFCON, and recently hosting the U17 men’s AFCON.

They are also hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup jointly with Spain and Belgium, and Ouahbi says a lot of investment has taken place in this space.

"King Mohammed VI and our president of the Moroccan federation are very ambitious; they have given us all the means to be ambitious too in many different projects," explained Ouahbi.

Morocco’s success on the field can also be traced back to the last World Cup in 2022 in Qatar, where they became the first African country to reach the semifinals at the global event.

Ouahbi says that the success stories and investments in the academies are also starting to bear fruit.

Meanwhile, after his team just managed to beat their Kenyan counterparts 3-2 in the opening Group B game at this U20 AFCON, Ouahbi is backing the Rising Stars to go far in this competition.

Nicolas Jackson looks ahead to Liverpool clash after brace in Chelsea's European win

Tumi Ramakgopa explains why she prefers the 400m over the 100m hurdles

The 17-year-old has made history by securing both the junior and senior national titles in the 100m hurdles this year, but she remains focused on the 400m hurdles.

She aims to achieve even greater success as she transitions from a junior to a senior athlete.

While she excels in both events, Ramokgopa admits that choosing between them can be challenging at times.

However, after winning the national title and earning three junior medals this year, she shared her thoughts with SABC Sport.

"I definitely prefer the 400m hurdles because it allows me to establish my rhythm, and even if I make mistakes, somewhere I can always get my steps back," explained Ramokgopa.

The Grade 12 learner at Prestige College in Pretoria explains that she is using the 100m hurdles as a way to improve her speed, believing it will enhance her performance in the 400m hurdles.

"Competing in the 100m hurdles serves to develop speed over the hurdles. Aside from that, it has been a hectic three days, and I'm really really proud of myself for the season I've been able to produce so far," said Ramokgopa.

The athlete, coached by George Bradley, expressed deep admiration for her idol, Marione Fourie, a multiple-time national 100m hurdles champion.

Unfortunately, Fourie was unable to defend her title at the national championships due to her commitment to the Diamond League meeting in Xiamen and Shanghai.

The Tshwane-born athlete always believed it was only a matter of time before she claimed her first senior title, but the victory would have meant even more if her idol, Marione Fourie, had been in the race to push her to a faster time.

Paralympic star Mpumelelo Mhlongo shifts focus away from competition

Mhlongo last year clinched gold in the 100m T44 and bronze in the men’s 200m T64, while also breaking the world record in the T44 long jump.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mhlongo says he’s shifted his focus to finishing his academics so he can build more on his career outside of sport.

"I know I've been so used to having to balance life, sports and school, as well as a professional career, but lately it's really been one-sided," Mhlongo said.

"I've taken a back seat when it comes to sports, so I'm living more of a duality in terms how do I up-skill myself in school and finishing off the academia I've started, as well as potentially pursuing other avenues of certificates to bolster the value I add in my work.

"So I'm just giving back that time to my professional career, with a lot less sports-centric [focus], a lot less training, and I think that's the fortune of having a four-year cycle.

"A lot of athlete will have to do the in-betweens, but because we're three Paralympic Games in, and a multitude of World Champs, unless there is a balance to the current setting, that doesn't mean I have to give up more than I have previously.

"I need to really give time back to my professional life."

The Durban-born athlete says his only ambition for 2025 is to recover fully and qualify for the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow next year.

"I think this year I have the fortune of having no particular sporting ambition, other than walking away having fixed a lot of the injuries that I have created through the sort of training and trial and errors of preparations for the last decade," he added.

"Hopefully I end off the year strong and healthy, and maybe fast enough to do a World Indoor Championships in the 60m.

"Otherwise, if not, it will be a matter of seeing how far the body can take me through the year and what the European and SA season have in store for us next year."

The starter’s gun will sound at 9 am on Marine Drive in Milnerton this Mother’s Day.

The 41-year-old Boxer Athletics Club star has made an impressive start to the road running season, securing top 10 finishes at both the Spar Women’s 10km in Cape Town and the Run Your City race in Gqeberha just two weeks ago.

As the event marks its 10th anniversary in the Mother City, Phalula is determined to chase more records.

She told SABC Sport that she’s dedicating her efforts to her injured twin sister, Lebohang, who will miss the rest of the road running calendar.

The former Grand Prix titleholder has displayed remarkable longevity, maintaining a competitive edge for 25 years with no signs of slowing down.

She clocked an impressive 32:28 in Gqeberha to finish fifth - an outstanding feat for a runner who turned 41 earlier this year.

In the process, she shattered her own over-40 record of 34:01, once again proving her class in the Friendly City.

“Age doesn’t define me, I still feel young and full of energy,” said Phalula.

“I approach races with the mindset of a youngster, believing I can keep up with or even outperform them.

"That’s the attitude I carry into every competition. I’m also running for my sister. I wish she could be out here on the road with me, but I understand, she’s sidelined with an injury,” Phalula added.

In Cape Town, Phalula is aiming to push her limits and improve on her veteran record.

“I’m not putting too much pressure on myself, I just want to enjoy Sunday’s race and aim for another top-five finish,” she said.

“I truly believe it’s possible because I’ve been training hard, and nothing is out of reach if you stay focused and committed to your goals.

"It’s a big race ahead, and I’m more than ready to lace up and deliver another strong performance. I’m healthy, in great spirits, and feeling good as an elite athlete.”

The Crinums hope to finish the first round of the league on a high, having won four out of the five games played at the Superbowl.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mosoahle-Samm admits that the bodies are getting tired after playing seven days straight, but believes they are ready for a good fight this evening.

"Our second last game will be against The Stings. I think they are a great side that will put up a great fight against us.

"Whoever the opposition may be, we are ready, and yes, the bodies are getting tired, but we are taking each game as it comes," said the coach.

Mosoahle-Samm says she is impressed with how the Free State side has managed to handle big fixtures in power week 1.

"Games are coming in thick and fast. I think we have managed the other games we have played very well, and I'm very proud of the girls for the performances they've been able to produce. We put together some great scores against great games, which I think is very impressive," said a satisfied Mosoahle-Samm.

Mosoahle-Samm went on to say that they aim to maintain top position in the TNL power week 2 in June.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Chaumeton, who has French roots, said that surpassing his record would be an achievement worth boasting about, especially after recently claiming the national 5000m title.

He plans to compete in Europe in pursuit of this goal and is confident that he can go even faster and etch his name into the history books.

Backed by self-belief and determination, Chaumeton is fully focused on his record-breaking mission.

"It's going to be a 5km road race, and I have a few secrets that I can't disclose just yet. I can just say that my target is to run a new national record," said Chaumeton.

The national 5km record holder remains humble about his achievement and is eager to learn from seasoned athletes like Stephen Mokoka and other running legends, drawing inspiration from their experience to stay motivated for every race.

"Everything is compacted right now in South Africa. We want to make sure that we can extend our European season and follow in the footsteps of the greats that came before me.

"We need a revival of intensity or 'gees' in this sport, and that's what I'm here for," proclaimed Chaumeton.

The two-time national 1500m champion has set his sights on qualifying for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year, but this time in the 5000m event.

To secure his place in Japan, he must clock a time of 13:01.00.

"I'm not moving to the 10,000 m event just yet because I've always believed that the event is a marathon on the track. 5km on the track is how we are going to qualify for Tokyo," explained the track star.

Chaumeton, who trains under legendary coach Hendrick Ramaala at Zoo Lake, admits he made a mess of his 1500m race at the national championships in Cape Town a few weeks ago, but says clinching the 5000m title more than made up for that setback.

This would also be Draper's first clay court title, with the young Brit leaping up to No 2 in the ATP Race, which charts form over the course of the calendar year.

The win against Musetti saw Draper rise above Alexander Zverev in the ATP Race, with only Carlos Alcaraz now ahead of him in a ranking that will determine the eight players who will qualify for the prestigious ATP Finals in November.

Draper's appearance in the Madrid final will also cement his place at No 5 in the official ATP Rankings when they are updated on Monday.

Once again, the 23-year-old was hugely impressive as he overcame Musetti, with his power-packed game blowing his rival away in the first set.

He then had to dig deep to come through the second set tie-break when Musetti was threatening, with Draper relieved to get over the line.

"I felt I went a bit passive in moments and at this level against that calibre of opponent, he is not going to let you off the hook," Draper told Sky Sports Tennis.

"I think I did a great job changing tactically - serve-volleying and being a bit more on the front foot.

"In these moments now, I am thinking about all the pain I go through on a daily basis on the practice court, in strength and conditioning, all the sacrifices. I try and remember why I do it.

"It's points like those where I have to push myself a bit more and be the braver person."

Looking ahead to the final against Ruud, he added: "Ruud is a two-time French Open finalist and very accustomed to the clay. Boks to face Barbarians in historic first-ever clash on South African soil

The match at the DHL Stadium will officially usher in the Boks' 2025 season, with tickets going on sale from Tuesday, 6 May at 09h00 - exclusively available from Ticketmaster.

Historically such matches have been hosted overseas Ã¢- usually in London Ã¢- but organiser Pitch International agreed to bring the BaaBaas to South Africa in preparation for the Boks' Castle Lager Incoming Series opener against Italy in Pretoria a week later.

The Barbarians - consisting of players who ply their trade in the United Rugby Championship, French Top 14, English Premiership, Super Rugby, and the Japanese League - will be coached by experienced former Wallabies and Crusaders coach Robbie Deans.

The match will be the ninth between the Boks and the famous black-and-white clad BaaBaas, and the first since 2016 when the teams played to a 31-31 draw at Wembley Stadium in London.

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said the clash will be the perfect vehicle to get his players into match mode for the busy season ahead.

"It's always exciting to face the BaaBaas, and this match will be particularly special as it marks the first time that we will face them in South Africa," said Erasmus.

"For us this will be the perfect opportunity to get the players match-ready for the official international season, which starts a week later.

"With a big squad one can simulate a match situation, but there is nothing like a proper international with the full build-up and the pressure to get the players battle-ready, so this is a great occasion for us.

"With the Barbarians team featuring players from across the world, they are tough to analyse, so the key for us will be to focus on our structures and what we want to achieve on the field."

Erasmus added: "We may have had a satisfying 2024 season, but this is a new year and a fresh challenge, and we'd like to start strong and build momentum as the season progresses.

Walaza snapped up the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Athletics Championship title after storming to victory in the men’s 100m final in 10.00 seconds at Pilditch Stadium on Thursday.

The 19-year-old was closely followed by Kyle Zinn of University of the Western Cape (10.13) and Bradley Nkoana from North-West University (10.17), and reflected on his continued success in recent weeks.

“It was a great race, and I lined up against some of the top university athletes. I really enjoyed it, it was a good run and another automatic qualifying time," Walaza told SABC Sport.

“The atmosphere and level of competition were amazing. Winning is something I’ve been focused on since last year, and I’ve worked hard to stay calm and composed in those moments.

“But through it all, I’ve made sure to stay grounded. Humility means everything to me. I think I’m handling it well, and I can see that in both my performances and how people treat me. I’m proud of who I am.”

A first-year Supply Chain Management student at Tshwane University of Technology, Walaza registered his third automatic qualifying time for the World Athletics Championships after his 9.99-second win at the Gauteng North Provincial Championships and 10.00-victory at the ASA Senior Track and Field Championships last month.

Walaza, who was part of Team SA's Olympic silver medal-winning 4x100m relay team in Paris last year, has been selected for the 4x100m relay squad to compete at the World Relay Championships in China from 10–11 May, and he's confident of the team's chances.

"I can’t wait for the relay—we have to bring back a medal from China,” he concluded.

Annerie Dercksen top-scored for the visitors with an unbeaten 61 from 60 balls as the Proteas posted a total of 235-9 in their 50 overs before Sri Lanka knocked the target off in the 47th over.

The tourists did not get off to the best of starts after the home captain Chamari Athapaththu had won the toss and elected to field first.

Proteas opening pair Laura Wolvaardt (10) and Tazmin Brits (14) were both back in the dressing room with only 27 runs on the scoreboard.

Karabo Meso also did not last long in the middle and fell for 9 but number three Lara Goodall struck five fours to compile 46 from 63 deliveries.

The Proteas were in serious trouble at 120-5 but Dercksen, together with Sune Luus (31), Chloe Tryon (35) and Nadine de Klerk (17), lifted them over the 230 mark.

The visitors made a good start with the ball when seamer Masabata Klaas dismissed Sri Lanka's kingpin batter Athapaththu (9) in the third over.

Hasini Perera (42) and Vishmi Gunaratne (27) added 69 for the second wicket but the Proteas dismissed both batters within the space of three overs to leave the home side on 90-3 in the 18th over.

That was as good as it got for the Proteas though as Harshitha Samarawickrama (77) and Kavisha Dilhari (61) put on a match-winning partnership of 128 to kill off the contest.

The Proteas must now win their next two matches, against India and Sri Lanka, if they have any hope of reaching the final of the tri-series.

Rising Stars’ head coach Salim Babu says McCarthy has taken a keen interest in this U20 team and has already selected two players from this team to play in the Harambee Stars’ squad.

Babu says McCarthy is transforming the team.

"He's really transforming the team, as you can see, he already took two of our guys to the senior team.

"McCarthy is really transforming the national set-up because he really believes in working with the youth. That is very good for the nation, and for this project that we are having here," said Babu.

Part of McCarthy’s mandate in Kenya is to have a strong and competitive Harambee Stars national team in 2027, when the country jointly hosts the senior AFCON tournament with Tanzania and Uganda.

Despite starting the tournament with a 3-2 loss against Group B favourites Morocco yesterday, Kenya stole some attention with their impressive display.

Babu says reaching the last four and qualifying for the World Cup would be very special for his team and their project.

Babu’s team will fancy their chances of bouncing back against Tunisia and Nigeria in their final two matches in Group B.

He feels that they need to tighten up their defence to be in a position to win a game in this tournament.

Gabriella Marais secures her first-ever USSA 100m sprint title

Racing at Pilditch Stadium in Tshwane, Marais clocked 11.51 seconds to secure her first USSA title since 2021, marking a triumphant comeback.

She edged out North West University's Chardone Smidt, who took silver in 11.59, while Annestaysha George of the University of Pretoria claimed bronze in 11.68.

Defending champion Joviale Mbisha, a two-time USSA 100m winner and newly crowned national senior champion, had a disappointing outing, finishing eighth in 14.59 seconds.

"I'm extremely grateful to God for watching over me during the race. My body hasn't been feeling the best, so I'm just extremely grateful for everything," said a joyful Marais.

The 21-year-old, currently in her fourth year of law studies at Kovsies, was in disbelief after winning a race that included South African senior 100m champion and USSA titleholder Joviale Mbisha, an athlete she deeply respects and admires in the local sprinting scene.

"Joviale is such a fierce competitor, and I have so much respect for her. I also love racing against her because she brings the best out of you.

'It was definitely not an easy race, both mentally and physically, and I was very fortunate to win on the day," said the humble Marais.

The sprinter, coached by the legendary Tannie Ans at Kovsies, the same coach who guided Wayde van Niekerk to his historic 43.03-second Olympic and world record in 2016, told the national broadcaster that her confidence grew with each round, and by the final, she fully believed in herself.

The Bloemfontein-based sprinter says she is gaining valuable knowledge from 75-year-old coach Tannie Ans, who has developed some of the country’s top sprinters and remains passionate about mentoring the next generation during training sessions at Kovsies.

Marais is aiming to earn a spot on Team South Africa for the World University Games in Germany, scheduled from 13 to 27 July, and is also planning to compete in several league meetings across Europe.

Makazole Mapimpi becomes Sharks' all-time leading try scorer

The Sharks picked up eight points on the road against plucky Edinburgh and Ulster - albeit just - marking a successful tour. The manner of the victories - 18-19 over Edinburgh and 22-19 over Ulster - left much to be desired given their Springbok-laden match XV, but they got the job done.

In the Edinburgh clash, Mapimpi received a wide pass from Siya Masuku to go over in the corner for the post-hooter match-winning try. That score took him past Sharks legend JP Pietersen, who crossed the whitewash 39 times in 137 appearances for the Sharks.

Mapimpi's 40 tries came in just 88 matches for the Sharks, an indication of the finisher's efficiency. The winger struck again against Ulster last week, dotting down untouched thanks to a bullet pass from scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse.

The double World Cup winner has been prolific in the Green and Gold as well, scoring 32 tries in just 45 Test caps. The Boks flyer's last points came in the End of Year Tour against Scotland at Murrayfield, where he scored a brace.

The Tunisian has found the going rather tough in his first season at Naturena, and may even be losing certain sections of their fan base already due to unsatisfactory results.

As Chiefs get ready to host Orlando Pirates in a Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium tomorrow, Nabi – speaking through his translator Cedric Kaze – says they may be ill, but not dead.

"We say that the biggest clubs can get ill but they never die – and we believe that we are the biggest club in South Africa," said Nabi.

"Probably at this time we might be a little bit ill, but we believe we're still alive and we can still do something."

Despite having last won a league encounter on 4 March, the former AS FAR coach says they have as much chance of winning the Soweto Derby as their opponents, who edged them 1-0 in their last meeting in February.

"If Kaizer Chiefs wins this Derby on Saturday, it's not going to be a surprise – if Orlando Pirates wins the Derby, it's not going to be a surprise as well," he added.

"Those are the two biggest clubs in South Africa, and despite our current log standing, we believe two big clubs will play on Saturday, even if we are not in a very good position. But we feel that whoever wins on Saturday, it's because he has deserved it."

On Wednesday, they shocked the hosts Egypt, coming back from a goal down to beat them 4-1 at the Suez Canal Authority stadium in Ismailia.

Egypt led 1-0 at halftime, but in the second half, it was an Ibrahim Kamara show, as he went on to score a hat-trick.

The 19-year-old says they are not in this tournament to make up the numbers.

"Playing against the hosts is always difficult, but when we got back to the dressing room after the first half, we motivated ourselves to deliver a comeback win," said Kamara.

George Matlou advocates for stability under Nasreddine Nabi

The Glamour Boys go into the first of two successive Soweto Derbies against rivals Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium tomorrow before meeting again for the Nedbank Cup final in Durban next weekend.

It’s expected the two fixtures will have a huge bearing on Nabi’s future at the end of the season, as fans again demand changes, but Matlou would like to see continuity.

"The pressure is there, and we all know we have to win the Pirates game on Saturday. So, yes, the pressure has been there since the first day of the season – the pressure is always there when playing for Kaizer Chiefs," said Matlou.

"But so far so good, results are telling everything – we're going into the final next week, so continuity has to be there [for Nabi], we have to carry on with the technical team or whoever is there, and I'm happy so far."

On facing Pirates, Matlou admits it’s natural for Chiefs players to raise their level, but that does not mean they give less effort against their other league rivals.

"Every game is important, it doesn't matter if it's a big game or small game – you can't say there's a smaller team in the PSL, I'm not going to undermine any team playing in the PSL, they show their quality with the positions they're in," he added.

"But, of course, there are big games like the Soweto Derby, playing against Mamelodi Sundowns, and of course it motivates you as a player – I don't think there's a player that doesn't want to play a big game.

"We've been confident enough, so any team that comes [to face Chiefs], we will get maximum points or whatever [the win brings], it doesn't matter which team we play against, but we all know a big game is a big game."
