The 44-year-old Nonu only arrived in Durban last week, and has been brought in primarily to mentor the Sharks' younger players and share his experience, so his inclusion on the bench for Tuesday's Greatest Rivalry showdown with his former international team has raised eyebrows.

Pietersen, though, insisted Nonu's selection had not come at the expense of a younger player and said the circumstances left him with limited midfield options.

The Sharks coach believes Nonu's experience will add value to an occasion that is already historic in its own right.

"His name says it all," Pietersen told reporters on Monday. "This is our strongest team.

"It's great he's here with us and giving our young boys just a feel of what the All Blacks may give to them. He's slotted in like he was here for a long (time) and the boys love him.

"It's going to be an emotional game for Ma'a because it's the first time he's playing against the All Blacks. It'll be awesome to see tomorrow."

Nonu retired from international rugby in 2015 as a two-time Rugby World Cup winner with 103 All Blacks caps, but has continued his playing career with clubs around the world in what has been a remarkable career.

While the Sharks will be heavily weakened for Tuesday evening's clash, Pietersen has promised his players will be giving it their all.

"We will not be at 100%, at best at 70 or 80%, but we'll give it everything we can," the Sharks coach added.

Meanwhile, persistent rain is forecast for the match, which could turn out to be somewhat of a leveler.
