Xabi Alonso focuses on squad as Real Madrid 'freeze' January deals 'for now'

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso is focusing on his current squad after the club confirmed there are unlikely to be major signings in the January 2026 transfer window.

Alonso has repeatedly stressed the importance of using the players at his disposal to achieve success.

"No one has a fixed place in the XI. Those who deserve to play will play," Alonso said earlier this season, underlining his belief in merit-based selection.

He also emphasised his long-term vision: "I want to build a great team. With the ambition that we will achieve great things."

Despite Alonso's requests for reinforcements, the board has told him there are no funds for major January signings and no suitable deals are available mid-season.

Sources close to Alonso confirmed he asked for a deep-lying playmaker, specifically someone like Manchester City's Rodri. "Xabi wants his Xabi," a source said, referring to the coach's preference for a midfielder capable of dictating play from deep.

Alonso also wants defensive cover following injuries to Antonio Rudiger and Eder Militao and has previously noted the need for a backup striker.

With winter additions reportedly off the table, Alonso will rely on the squad he has, including summer 2025 signings Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Franco Mastantuono. He has said: "I have to work with the players at my disposal," highlighting his determination to make the current group competitive across all competitions.

Real Madrid are reportedly planning for the summer 2026 window, keeping an eye on targets like Rodri and the young midfielder Nico Paz, but Alonso's immediate focus is on managing squad rotation and competing for titles this season.
