'We were completely inferior in every area' - Leipzig chief slams team after Bayern humiliation

RB Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schafer has branded his team's performance a "complete failure" after they suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

Luis Diaz scored a hat-trick as Bayern dominated at the Allianz Arena, with Aleksandar Pavlovic, Michael Olise and Harry Kane also finding the net. Andrija Maksimovic scored a late consolation for Leipzig in stoppage time.

"We were completely inferior in every area. We had no chance," Schafer told Sky after the match.

"We had an exceptionally bad day and Bayern also had a good one. Accordingly, you have to say that we were actually lucky to get away with just six goals."

Leipzig head coach Martin Demichelis accepted that his side had been thoroughly outplayed but insisted the manner of the defeat was unacceptable.

"You can lose here at the Allianz Arena, we know that, everyone knows that. But not like this!" he said.

Demichelis also apologised to the supporters who travelled to Munich to watch their team.

"The most important thing is to apologise to our fans who travelled here by car or plane," he added.

Goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt made several important saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming even worse, but Leipzig struggled to match Bayern's quality throughout the contest.

Schafer said the defeat had exposed the gap between Leipzig's performance and the standards required at the highest level.

"Today we saw a lesson in what it means to perform at world-class level or top level. And we have a very, very, very large amount of work ahead of us," he said.

Leipzig have little time to recover, with a Champions League meeting against Real Madrid awaiting them on Wednesday.

Demichelis urged his players to put the result behind them quickly and focus on the challenge ahead.

"There aren't many positives to take from today's game. That's why we have to forget everything we did here today as quickly as possible," he said.
