'We kept believing' - Tuchel praises England's 'character' to reach World Cup last 16

England endured a nightmare start in Atlanta when Brian Cipenga put DR Congo ahead after just seven minutes, leaving Tuchel's side with an uphill battle.

However, captain Harry Kane produced when it mattered most, scoring twice in the second half to secure a hard-fought victory and set up a last-16 clash with tournament co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

Tuchel admitted his team could not have asked for a worse opening but was pleased with the way his players responded under pressure.

"We kept believing. We had the worst start possible. First shot, first goal. Then, it became even more difficult," Tuchel said after the match.

England gradually found their rhythm and began to control possession as the first half progressed. Tuchel believed his side should also have been awarded a penalty after Kane appeared to be brought down by DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi inside the penalty area.

"After the first water break, we were on top of the game. I think we should have had a penalty," he added.

The England boss also credited the players who came off the bench, saying their energy and commitment helped turn the match in England's favour.

"The substitutes came on, and put the effort in, and we won it. Well deserved, but we had to work a lot," Tuchel said.

Despite the victory, Tuchel stressed that England must continue to show patience and resilience as the tournament enters the knockout stage.

"We have to have that mindset. If it is getting hard, it is getting hard, but don't lose patience and don't lose belief."

Kane once again proved decisive for England, delivering the goals that kept their World Cup hopes alive. Tuchel was full of praise for his captain's improving form, adding: "He is getting better."

England will now turn their attention to a high-profile last-16 showdown against Mexico, knowing another determined display will be needed to keep their World Cup campaign on track.
