Tshegofatso Mabasa brace leads Orlando Pirates into Nedbank Cup quarter-finals

Defending champions Orlando Pirates progressed to the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals with a commanding 4-0 triumph over Hungry Lions at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The defending champions opened the scoring with an own goal in the first half, followed by Tshegofatso Mabasa and Monnapule Saleng finding the net in the second half, sealing their victory.

The game started evenly, but Orlando Pirates showcased their class as Morena Monaheng inadvertently scored an own goal. Despite Hungry Lions' efforts, Pirates continued to press forward.

Hungry Lions also posed a threat, nearly equalizing against their formidable opponents.

A worrying moment occurred when Makhehlene Makhaula required medical attention and was stretchered off the pitch.

However, updates during halftime indicated positive communication with the medical team.

The match intensified in the second half with Sbongakonke Gumede's sending off for a foul on Patrick Maswanganyi. Although Mabasa's subsequent free-kick hit the crossbar, he later scored with a fine finish assisted by Kabelo Dlamini.

Monnapule Saleng added another goal, capitalizing on their numerical advantage.

Mabasa completed his brace with a superb volley, securing a convincing 4-0 win for Orlando Pirates and arguably the goal of the match.
