Sundowns' invincible quest shattered after final-day defeat to Cape Town City

Mamelodi Sundowns saw their dream invincible season shattered after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Cape Town City at Loftus.

Jaedin Rhodes scored the only goal of the game just after the hour mark as the Citizens certainly somewhat spoiled the the home team's title celebrations.

Masandawana came into the contest unbeaten after 29 league matches and were looking to cap off the first ever 'invincible' campaign in South Africa's top-flight.

The last time the Rulani Mokwena-coached side had lost a league match was on 2 September 2022 when they suffered a 2-1 defeat to cross-town rivals SuperSport United.

The home side missed a cutting edge on attack as with Marcelo Allende and Sphelele Mkhulise both suspended for the final fixture.

Cape Town City were compact in defence in but were always a threat going forward and duly got their rewards when Rhodes fired them into the lead in the second half.

The victory for the Citizens sees Eric Tinkler's charges finish in fifth place in the league, level on points but below Sekhukhune United.

It was still an outstanding league season for Rulani Mokwena's Sundowns outfit as they end with 73 points after 30 matches.
