Indications are that the Stellies are open to allowing Barns to rejoin his former side – possibly on loan or even permanently – two seasons after he moved to the Western Cape from the Natal Rich Boys.
While Barns has not been a regular starter, he has previously been regarded as an important squad member during Steve Barker’s tenure at the club.
However, following Barker’s departure and the arrival of new head coach Gavin Hunt, the midfielder’s role could diminish significantly this season, with most of his appearances so far already having come from the bench.
Sources suggest that, with his future at Stellenbosch uncertain, advanced discussions are now underway over a move back to Richards Bay.
The Rich Boys, who usually fight for survival in the topflight, have been active in strengthening their squad with several international signings as coach Ronnie Gabriel looks to steady the ship.
Despite that approach, the club is believed to be keen on reuniting with a familiar figure who understands their environment and demands, and was a key player during his previous spell at Richards Bay.
The public broadcaster understands that the prospect of welcoming him back has been met with enthusiasm from those in charge, but with only hours remaining before the transfer window shuts, it remains to be seen whether a deal can be finalised in time.
