Sekhukhune hold firm to shock Orlando Pirates in Betway Premiership opener

Sekhukhune claimed a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Orlando Pirates in their Betway Premiership opener at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, delivering a setback to new Buccaneers coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

Both sides entered the clash buoyed by MTN8 quarter-final triumphs a week earlier - Pirates brushing aside Polokwane City, while Sekhukhune edged past TS Galaxy in Polokwane - with each already assured of a semi-final place in the cup.

Sekhukhune coach Eric Tinkler made key adjustments to his starting XI, recalling captain Linda Mntambo and midfielder Thabang Monare to inject experience.

The hosts dominated early possession, but the first half's most dramatic moment nearly handed Pirates the lead in bizarre fashion.

Defender Daniel Cardoso's attempted clearance struck the post, with goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner scrambling to prevent an own goal.

The decisive breakthrough arrived shortly after the interval. Siphesihle Mkhize forced the ball over the line despite Pirates shot-stopper Sipho Chaine twice blocking initial efforts. The goal silenced the home crowd and shifted the momentum firmly towards Babina Noko.

Pirates rallied late on, seeking a leveller, and came agonisingly close when Mbekezeli Mbokazi's powerful header rattled the upright with 15 minutes remaining. Despite sustained pressure, the visitors' defence held firm to secure the points.

The result marks an encouraging start for Sekhukhune's league campaign, while Pirates face questions about converting dominance into goals under their new boss.
