Richards Bay advance to Carling Knockout semis as Orlando Pirates pay the penalty

Richards Bay advanced to the semifinals of the Carling Knockout after eliminating Orlando Pirates 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a goalless stalemate.

The Natal Rich Boys converted all five of their penalties while Deon Hotto saw his effort saved when goalkeeper Philasande Manqele moved smartly to his right.

The Soweto giants came into the contest with a reputation as cup specialists having already claimed the MTN8 trophy this season but their efforts to add to that silverware evaporated.

The league form however is a completely different story as Jose Riveiro's charges find themselves languishing in 13th position in the standings having only won two of eight encounters.

Pirates were certainly favourites coming into the contest against a team themselves struggling in the league as Richards Bay sit second from bottom on the table.

The home side though nullified the attacking threats of the Buccaneers with Kermit Erasmus, Evidence Makgopa and Monnapule Saleng firing blanks.

All three forwards as well as Thembinkosi Lorch were replaced by Riveiro to find a cutting edge but to avail.

The hosts held on through the period of extra-time and forced a penalty shootout where Manqele proved to be the hero.
