The 23-year-old spent the 2025-26 campaign with the Serie A runners-up, with Napoli's obligation to buy clause activated after securing qualification for next season's Champions League. The overall deal is worth 43.2m pounds, including the initial loan fee paid last summer.
Hojlund departs Old Trafford three years after joining United from Atalanta in a deal worth up to 72 million pounds. Despite showing flashes of promise, the Denmark international struggled to consistently justify that price tag, scoring 26 goals in 95 appearances across all competitions and helping the club lift the FA Cup.
His fortunes improved after returning to familiar surroundings in Italy. Hojlund scored 16 goals in 44 appearances for Napoli in all competitions last season, including 12 goals in 33 league matches, playing a key role as Antonio Conte's side finished second in Serie A and secured a place in Europe's premier club competition.
United decided to move the forward on following the arrival of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig last season, paving the way for Hojlund's loan switch. Sources have indicated that the 38 million pounds permanent fee will effectively offset the amount United have committed to paying Atalanta for midfielder Ederson, who is expected to arrive at Old Trafford in a deal worth an initial 35 million pounds plus add-ons.
Hojlund's exit is expected to be one of several at United in the off-season break as the club continues reshaping its squad. Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho are all set to leave following the expiration of their contracts, while interest is also building in Joshua Zirkzee, Altay Bayindir and Manuel Ugarte.
The club are additionally hoping to finalise permanent departures for Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana after their respective loan spells at Barcelona and Trabzonspor. Rashford's agreement includes an option that could see Barcelona sign him permanently before mid-June, while Onana has reportedly been informed that he does not feature in manager Michael Carrick's plans for the upcoming season.
For Hojlund, however, the move marks a fresh start after rediscovering his form in Serie A, with Napoli betting that his impressive loan campaign is only the beginning of a more productive chapter in his career.
