Pochettino impressed by Dortmund star Mathis Albert after USMNT debut

Albert entered the game shortly after the hour mark and quickly provided a spark. The Dortmund youngster burst into the penalty area from the left before being brought down by Peru's Jesus Pretell, earning a penalty that Malik Tillman converted to restore the USA's lead.

Pochettino praised Albert's willingness to attack from his first touch.

"First action, he steps onto the field and bam, control and off he goes."

The USMNT coach acknowledged that Albert still needs experience and improvement, but said his desire to play and make an impact was exactly what the team needed.

A rapid rise

Albert's international debut adds another milestone to an impressive rise. He became the youngest American to appear in the Bundesliga last season at 16 years and 11 months.

Despite interest from clubs seeking a loan deal, Dortmund kept him as part of their long-term plans. His senior opportunities have remained limited, though, with the teenager making only one appearance so far this season - a full 90 minutes in the DFB-Pokal against fifth-tier HEBC.

Pochettino therefore left him out of the 2026 World Cup squad but included him in the current rebuilding process, alongside 12 other uncapped players, as the USMNT looks toward the 2030 World Cup.

Another chance against Chile

Albert played 29 minutes against Peru, completing nine of 10 passes, including six in the opposition half. He also attempted a shot and delivered a cross as his direct approach unsettled Peru's defense.

His performance could now strengthen the case for more first-team opportunities at Dortmund under Niko Kovac, who has yet to use him in the Bundesliga this season.

Albert will have another chance to impress when the United States face Chile on Tuesday, September 29.
