Pirates only team to challenge Sundowns –Teko Modise

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise believes the Buccaneers are the only side strong enough to challenge the Brazilians for the title next season.

Speaking to SABC Sport ahead of the Nedbank Cup final between Pirates and Sekhukhune United at Loftus Stadium on Saturday evening. He says the Soweto Giants have a squad capable of winning the league.

"I remember you [Mazola Molefe] actually asked this question to Andile [Ncube, on Sports Night Live on Metro FM] 'If Orlando Pirates win this [Nedbank Cup], would it be a successful season?', and I strongly believe, yes.  And with the players they have, I echo that every season, they are the only team that can challenge Mamelodi Sundowns," he claimed.

Pirates have already been crowned MTN8 champions this season and followed that up by finishing runners-up behind Sundowns in the DStv Premiership.

Modise says adding the Nedbank Cup could trigger the self-belief they can put a stop to Downs’ six-year dominance.

"With all these victories and finding themselves in another final in the same year, maybe, that will make them realise as well the potential that they have. Yes, they are playing Sekhukhune, who come into this game as underdogs.

“It's always difficult to play underdogs, but the advantage that Orlando Pirates have is they are used to playing with the big crowds and I think that will work in their favour."
