Pep Guardiola hails Man City newbie Rayan Cherki as one of the best he has coached

Cherki joined City in pre-season from Lyon in a 30â-34 million pounds move and made an immediate impact, scoring on his Premier League debut against Wolves and featuring at the Club World Cup. However, a thigh injury in August sidelined him for several weeks, limiting him to just seven appearances so far.

He returned recently with a five-minute cameo in the 2-0 win over Everton, nearly assisting Erling Haaland for a third goal. He's now set for his Champions League debut as City travel to Villarreal.

Guardiola is excited about what Cherki can bring to the squad but emphasizes the need for him to adapt to the team's system and tactical discipline. "Technically and individually, he is top," said Guardiola. "One of the huge talents I've ever seen in my career."

"He doesn't have to always do exceptional things - just play football," he explained. "He's a street player, very intuitive, always asking for the ball. But settling into the rhythm of the team will take time."

The praise carries extra weight considering Guardiola's resume. Over the years, he has worked with global stars such as Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Kevin De Bruyne, and Erling Haaland - yet still singles out Cherki as a standout talent.

Asked whether Cherki will fit into the team ethic, Guardiola was confident: "Yes, of course. These kinds of players see everything."

The City boss also praised young midfielder Nico Gonzalez, expected to start in Rodri's absence due to a muscle injury. "Nico is getting better and better. He's open-minded, a lovely guy. His parents must be so proud."

As City build momentum both domestically and in Europe, Guardiola remains optimistic. "We're scoring goals, creating chances, and not conceding much. I feel each game is better than the last. The players are working a lot - and we are very good."
