Orlando Pirates conclude Evidence Makgopa deal

SABC Sport can confirm that Orlando Pirates have tied striker Evidence Makgopa to a new long-term contract.

The lanky forward who recently scored in back-to-back Soweto Derbies against Kaizer Chiefs had entered the final months of his initial deal, but it’s understood there was never any fears he would leave The Buccaneers.

Pirates are yet to make an official announcement on Makgopa, however, the public broadcaster can reveal the player has put pen to paper to stay beyond June 30 and look forward to the club appointing a new coach.

Jose Riveiro is said to be on his way to Egyptian giants Al Ahly and takes charge of his final game for Pirates tonight in the Betway Premiership against Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium to bid farewell.

Makgopa has been an integral part of the Spanish mentor’s tenure at Pirates having shared the scoring responsibility with Tshegofatso Mabasa.

The 24-year-old moved to the Soweto giants three years ago from Baroka FC with the Limpopo-based outfit snubbing several overseas offers in favour of accepting a bid from their Premier Soccer League rivals.

It’s understood the door is not closed for the Bafana Bafana international to fulfil his dream of playing abroad, especially if he can make the national team squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco later this year.

Hugo Broos has again sealed a spot for South Africa at the continental tournament and Makgopa was part of the group that helped Bafana clinch a bronze medal in Cote d’Ivoire early last year.

Makgopa has scored 10 goals in 39 matches for Pirates so far this season and will look forward to adding to his overall tally at the club in the coming months following an agreement between the two parties on a new deal.
