Newcastle complete signing of Man City midfielder Nico Gonzalez

Newcastle have completed the signing of Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City in a deal worth 52 million pounds available in potential add-ons.

The 24-year-old Spanish midfielder has signed a long-term contract at St James' Park after completing his medical and was presented to supporters ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Cup meeting with West Bromwich Albion.

Gonzalez joins after 18 months at City, where he made 59 appearances in all competitions and scored four goals. Signed from Porto in January 2025, he helped the club win the 2026 Carabao Cup and FA Cup, scoring the winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton.

Despite previously saying he did not want to leave City, Gonzalez has moved on after falling down the midfield pecking order. City have signed Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi for a reported 85.6 million pounds, while Elliot Anderson also arrived from Nottingham Forest for 116 million pounds.

Gonzalez is the fourth senior midfielder to leave City this transfer window after Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders.

His arrival provides Newcastle with Premier League experience as new head coach Matthias Jaissle reshapes the squad. Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali have departed for Arsenal and Tottenham respectively, while Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier have also left.

Jaissle believes Gonzalez can make an immediate impact, praising his ball-carrying ability, defensive discipline and physical strength.

"Nico is a really strong ball carrier - somebody who can drive the team forward while staying composed under pressure," Jaissle said. "He also brings discipline defensively, he reads the game well and his physicality makes him well suited to the Premier League."

Gonzalez, who previously played for Barcelona and Valencia before joining Porto, is relishing the opportunity to play regularly at Newcastle.

"I'm really happy to be here at this amazing club," he said. "I've only heard top words about the club and the city, so I'm really excited to live here and to be part of this project.

Gonzalez leaves City with fond memories of his time at the club.

"It has been a privilege to be part of Manchester City," he said. "I've loved my time here, but I have a desire to play more often. I leave with nothing but love and gratitude for City."
