Marcus Rashford training absence sparks late Barcelona selection twist at Camp Nou

Barcelona have been left with an unexpected selection problem after Marcus Rashford missed a second consecutive training session ahead of Saturday's La Liga meeting with Athletic Club at Camp Nou.

Hansi Flick's side are preparing for a landmark afternoon, with several players set to experience the stadium for the first time since the renovation, but Rashford's sudden absence has created uncertainty.

The England forward has played at Camp Nou before during his Manchester United career, yet this would be his first appearance there in Barcelona colours. Rashford featured for England earlier in the week, coming off the bench for 15 minutes and delivering an assist against Albania, having played 64 minutes in the 2-0 win over Serbia just days earlier. However, he has not taken part in Barca's last two training sessions.

Spanish outlet Diario AS have reported that Rashford has not suffered an injury. He arrived at the club's training base early on Friday to speak directly with Flick and request permission to miss training again. The absences are understood to be due to a personal matter, and he has not yet been ruled out of facing Athletic. Even so, Flick admitted the disruption is "far from ideal" as his squad finalise preparations.

Rashford has been Barcelona's main option on the left wing since Raphinha suffered an injury last month, and the Brazilian is only expected to return to the matchday squad on Saturday. With his fitness still being managed, Raphinha is unlikely to start, and Barcelona want him fully ready for next week's league match against Alaves.

Flick had planned for Rashford to start both against Athletic and in Tuesday's Champions League clash with Chelsea, but the late twist could force a reshuffle. Ferran Torres, Fermin Lopez and Roony Bardghji are all options, although none are natural fits for the left side.

Barcelona now face a tense wait to see whether Rashford will be available on what is set to be a significant return to their iconic home.
