Mamelodi Sundowns set to snap up Amajita skipper Lazola Maku

Following an apparently successful trial in Austria, South Africa U20 captain Lazola Maku is closing in on a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, with the newly crowned MTN8 champions expected to sign the midfielder on a free transfer.

SABC Sport understands that Sundowns are close to finalising a deal for the 19-year-old, who was on the books of Siwelele last season.

Maku recently returned from Austria, where he had trials with three clubs in SV Ried, newly promoted second-tier side FC Wacker Innsbruck and Rapid Vienna.

The midfielder subsequently spoke to the public broadcaster while awaiting feedback on the opportunities last month in the build-up to the COSAFA Cup.

Despite the interest abroad, Sundowns appear poised to secure his signature as they look to strengthen their squad with one of the country’s most promising young talents.

Maku arrives on the back of an impressive international assignment, having captained Amajita to the COSAFA Cup title in Mozambique.

The victory also secured qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations, where the team coached by Raymond Mdaka will defend the continental crown they won last year.

Although Maku is still awaiting feedback from the Austrian clubs, indications are that Sundowns are now firmly positioned to conclude the deal.

The midfielder’s next step could therefore be at Chloorkop, where he would hope to build on his recent international success and make the transition into senior football – and ultimately realise his dream to go abroad.
