Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United finalising Etiosa Ighodaro deal

SABC Sport understands Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United are finalising another agreement – this time involving striker Etiosa Ighodaro, who impressed while at Chippa United last season.

Following the imminent sale of winger Thapelo Maseko to Sundowns, in a deal that is believed to include cash plus midfielder Grant Magerman joining United permanently, the public broadcaster can also reveal discussions are underway to add Ighodaro to Gavin Hunt's squad.

The Nigerian forward was signed by The Brazilians in July 2021 and immediately loaned out to University of Pretoria followed by the Chilli Boys during the previous campaign, in which he finished as the club’s top goal scorer with 10 goals in 24 league matches.

SuperSport have already released striker Thamsanqa Gabuza, leaving a gap in the fowards department that needs attention, and the 22-year-old is naturally a player of interest after he narrowly missed out on the DStv Premiership Golden Boot award in 2022/23 by just one goal.

It's understood Sundowns still see a future for Ighodaro at the club, considering he has age on his side, but he faces stiff competition in Peter Shalulile, Abubeker Nasir and Casius Mailula all ahead of him in the pecking order under coach Rulani Mokwena.

The reigning league champions have also welcomed Lucas Costa to the club, with the Brazilian attacker capable of playing both in midfield as well as upfront.

Another factor for his potential move away revolves around the number of foreign internationals already on Sundowns' books, with the Premier Soccer League only permitting five non-South African players to be registered at one time in a season.
