Leaner available as free agent after Sekhukhune contract slip-up

SABC Sport can reveal that goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner has become a free agent after Sekhukhune United failed to trigger the option to extend his contract before the deadline.

The 28-year-old's deal officially expired at the end of last month, and with the option not exercised in time, Babina Noko lost the opportunity to retain one of their standout performers from last season.

It is understood the club subsequently attempted to negotiate a fresh contract with the player, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

Leaner established himself as Sekhukhune's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2025/26 campaign under both Eric Tinkler and later Paulus Masehe, producing a string of impressive displays that earned him recognition at national level.

His form caught the attention of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who included him in the squad for the international friendly against Panama. Leaner also remained in contention for South Africa's FIFA World Cup squad until the final stages of selection, underlining the progress he had made over the past year.

With no transfer agreed and no contract extension activated, Leaner now leaves Sekhukhune United without the club receiving a transfer fee.

His departure has surprised many, particularly given his status as the club's number one goalkeeper and the expectation was that he would continue in that role heading into the new season under new coach Cedric Kaze.

Leaner is now free to negotiate with and sign for any club of his choosing without Sekhukhune's involvement, making him one of the most attractive goalkeeping options currently available on the domestic market.

His availability is expected to generate significant interest as clubs continue with strengthening their squads ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
