Lance Davids opens up on Bayern Munich internship

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Lance Davids believes a two-week internship at Bayern Munich will help shape his path towards becoming a sporting director.

Davids has been broadening his expertise in football administration, with the opportunity at the German Bundesliga giants providing valuable insight into the inner workings of one of Europe’s most successful clubs.

The 2010 World Cup squad member is using the experience as another step in his education away from the pitch.

Speaking to SABC Sport from Munich, Davids reflected on the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of how Bayern operates at the highest level.

"We have had many assignments to complete in this football director's course, but the biggest assignment we were given was to go and complete an internship at a football club. I'm now learning at one of the best clubs in the world and the experience so far has been eye-opening."

The 41-year-old added that, despite Bayern Munich’s size and stature, he has not been overwhelmed by the experience, finding the club’s inner workings easier to grasp than he might have expected as he prepares for a future role as a sporting director.

"Many people have misconceptions about this club just because of how big it is, but it is a club with structure and they are all aligned because everyone knows what they have to do.

"I've learned about the value of teamwork again and the importance of watching over coaches, scouts, and players."

Davids then suggested what potentially sets apart the German side and PSL clubs could be the lengths at which they go to hold each other accountable.
