Kieran Trippier leads 'emotional farewell' as Newcastle confirm four departures

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe confirmed four departures in an emotional end-of-season afternoon at St James' Park on Sunday, with senior players and long-serving staff given a warm send-off after the final match.

Among those leaving are defenders Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth, along with club doctor Paul Catterson and goalkeeper Max Thompson, whose contract has come to an end. The quartet were acknowledged during a lap of appreciation after the match, which Howe described as a "special but emotional" moment for everyone involved.

Speaking after the game, Howe reflected on the scenes around the stadium and the impact of those departing.

"Every time we walk around at the end of the season it is a really nice moment to reflect," he said. "But today was slightly different because we are focusing on Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Paul Catterson and Max Thompson.

"They are people who have done a really great job for us, on and off the pitch. They have given incredible service to the club and we are going to miss them. In football, nothing stays the same."

Trippier, who captained Newcastle in his final appearance at St James' Park, was singled out by Howe for his leadership and influence within the dressing room.

"I am delighted for him personally," Howe said. "He is brilliant on the pitch, but also off it. He has a stabilising effect in the dressing room, brings positivity in difficult moments, and inspires those around him. Wherever he goes next, he will be a big asset."

The Newcastle head coach also praised his side's performance in their final outing of the season, a strong display against West Ham United, winning 3-1, insisting his players maintained high standards despite having little at stake competitively.

"It would have been easy for people to say we had nothing to play for," Howe added. "But we have a duty to perform at our best. I was really pleased with the attitude and the way we went about the game."

The afternoon at St James' Park ended with applause, reflection, and farewells, marking the end of a significant chapter for both players and staff at the club.
