Kappa joins other big guns in the race for Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana kit deal

SABC Sport understands Kappa are among the frontrunners to replace Lecoq Sportif as the South African Football Association (SAFA) technical sponsors, however the brand is keeping their cards very close to their chest.

The current deal between SAFA and Lecoq comes to an end on the 31st of December 2025, and the local football mother body is already shopping for the best deal that will match the expectations.

Despite denials from Kappa South Africa's Head, Ricky Joseph, the bidding for this deal is ongoing behind the scenes.

"You know the truth is right now we believe we've got the biggest team in Africa. Kaizer Chiefs is bigger than the national team to be honest with you, we would always look at partnerships with other clubs and the national team,” Joseph said.

“We would always consider looking at it, right now we're just happy with the Kaizer Chiefs sponsorship and that's where our focus remains at this moment in time. If you saw my emails and phone, we get asked by teams all the time to sponsor. So, it's really just about making sure we have the right partnerships done at the right time."

When Bafana Bafana achieved their highest honour yet since the readmission to international football in 1992, winning the AFCON 1996 title on home soil, they were sporting an iconic Kappa jersey.

SABC Sport has established that Kappa, Puma, Adidas, Nike, Macron, and Umbro are among the kit companies that meet the SAFA specifications for kits, which will accommodate all national teams, SAFA youth tournaments, and referees.

It’s expected that these companies will soon be meeting SAFA for presentations as the bidding phase reaches a crucial stage.

Joseph says any technical partnership deal takes a process to conclude.

"We are always open to discussing it, as I said, we need time to make the partnership work and I mean, these jerseys were designed over a year ago, so everything takes time and we wanna do it properly should we partner anyone else in the future."
