Riveiro questions match officials in Bucs/Downs showdown

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has questioned the readiness of match officials who were in charge of their 1-0 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Buccaneers mentor charged at referee Masixole Bambiso at full-time, feeling aggrieved at some of his decisions during the game at Orlando Stadium.

Although Bambiso is a FIFA-accredited ref, Riveiro questioned whether he was sharp enough for a game of that magnitude on Saturday.

"I've said many times that being a referee is something that I will never do in this business. It's not for me, it's so difficult that's why you need to be prepared. Today was a very intense game and I guess it wasn't easy for the match officials," he said.

Pressed to elaborate, the Pirates coach preferred to say as little as possible and insisted that it was the role of the media to highlight the shortcomings.

"I'm sure you like to write a lot and I'm sure you have your own opinions. You can write about anything besides who's playing. It's not the role of the coach in any club to talk about the referees and how they should do their job," Riveiro concluded.
