'It's been incredible' - Pep Chavarria targets Chelsea trophies under Alonso

Pep Chavarria has described his first weeks at Chelsea as "incredible" and believes working under head coach Xabi Alonso will help him improve and compete for major trophies.

The 28-year-old joined Chelsea from Rayo Vallecano in August and has made seven competitive appearances for the club. After taking an unconventional route to the top, the Spanish left-back is determined to make the most of his opportunity at Stamford Bridge.

"It's been incredible," Chavarria told Chelsea's official website. "To arrive at this club, this amazing club, and the welcome from my team-mates was incredible. I'm very happy with it all, with the staff. They bring me a lot of love."

Chavarria began his senior career with fourth-tier Spanish side Figueres before working his way through the divisions. He made his La Liga debut at 24 and went on to make 125 appearances for Rayo, establishing himself as an energetic, attack-minded full-back.

He believes the Premier League suits his style of play, particularly his ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch.

"I think that the Premier League now is the best league in the world," he said. "It has intensity, a lot of quality, and the players are top.

"I love going box-to-box and working for the team."

However, Chavarria has also recognised the physical demands of English football and the need to remain focused throughout every match.

"If you don't stay focused, in one second you can lose the game. You need to be very concentrated all the time," he said.

Chavarria is enjoying working with Alonso and believes the Chelsea head coach can help him reach another level. The defender said he had settled in well and was learning what his manager expects from him.

"Xabi is one of the best coaches in the world right now," he said. "I am learning a lot and I know that he wants to help me."

Alonso wants Chavarria to attack and defend with energy, while the defender has also received help from team-mate Moises Caicedo as he adjusts to life in England. The midfielder has been helping him learn English, with Chavarria taking weekly lessons.

The left-back has already experienced the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge after making his debut against Fulham and starting the Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town.

"The stadium is incredible," he said. "I saw a lot of matches on TV when I was a kid. I remember that and now I say: 'Wow, I'm here'."

Having progressed through the Spanish football pyramid, Chavarria now wants to win silverware with Chelsea and help the club qualify for the Champions League.

"I want to win trophies. This is my goal," he said.

He also hopes to earn international recognition, but insists Chelsea's success comes first.

"First of all, win a trophy, and then go with the national team. But for me, the most important is the club."

Chelsea face Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Chavarria keen to help his new team turn their ambitions into results.

"I think that we will bring victories and the fans will be happy - happy to win some trophies," he said.
