Hugo Broos now working on his core team for the AFCON

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says that from the next camp, he will be sticking with his core 23-man squad that he intends to take to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January 2024 in Ivory Coast.

Speaking just before the team’s final training session ahead of the international friendly against Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at the Orlando Stadium (17:00).

Broos says his selection for the next camp is pointing towards his final selection.

Bafana will play ESwatini and Ivory Coast in next month’s international friendlies, home and away respectively.

"When you see a little bit of our last three games, two times Liberia, even in Liberia there weren't much changes but take the team of Morocco. I think we will more and more go to the team maybe tactically sometimes or because we think that it's better with another player," Broos said.

"There will be no more big changes for the next month, about to go to a core of players which we will work with to AFCON. Maybe yes, there will be an injury or a player that plays really good that we take with the team but it will be from next month, it will be really the same core of players that will play the games."

From this camp, Broos is missing some injured players like Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Themba Zwane, Thapelo Morena, Njabulo Blom, Cassius Mailula, Thapelo Maseko, Teboho Mokoena and Luke le Roux, are some of the regulars missing from this camp. Broos is now more focused on fine tuning his team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers starting in November and also the AFCON.

"ESwatini and Ivory Coast are two qualifiers and maybe also the 23 players that will go to Ivory Coast for AFCON. So, that's now the plan to have that core of players and to work with them and to prepare them for good qualifiers start and AFCON."
