Hugo Broos: Namibia game was not about result

Following Bafana Bafana’s goalless draw against Namibia, coach Hugo Broos said the international friendly was never about the result.

The Belgian mentor gave a number of new faces a run on Saturday at Orlando Stadium, including European-based winger Kobamelo Kodisang and striker Lebo Mothiba, who returned to the national team for the first time since 2019.

Broos would have loved a victory, but pointed to the bigger picture.

"A very interesting game for us. We said before the game that we should give chances to new players to show and prove themselves, and that was the most important goal," said Broos.

"The results was secondary, but I'll be honest, I'd rather like to win a game than to lose or play [to] a draw because we were also the better team today.

"We had many chances, and that's maybe why we drew – we couldn't use our chances to score, so it was a little bit of a pity.

"In the first half, we were searching a little bit and you'll have that when you have so many new players in the team, who are not used to playing together, and they needed a bit of adaptation. But still, I'm happy with what I saw."

Asked if there were players that stood out, Broos refused to single out individuals as he pointed out he was satisfied with the collective, and would review those new to the set up at a later stage.

"For me, the most important thing – and I said it before the game, especially to the new guys also, that they have to show what they can do, but first of all they have to play as a team and not thinking, 'I have to show something to the coach,'" he added.

"None of them did that, and again we will, together with the technical staff, review the match and evaluate the performances of every player, but certainly of the new players."
