Harry Kane misses from the spot as Spain edge England in Nations Cup opener

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the Group C clash after just two minutes.

Anthony Gordon drew Thomas Tuchel's side level after 36 minutes and Harry Kane put the Three Lions ahead five minutes before the break.

Kane then missed from the penalty spot with 53 minutes on the clock before Alex Baena came off the bench and promptly restored parity with his goal on the hour mark.

Fellow Spain substitute Mikel Oyarzabal (74') netted the winner shortly after his introduction.

Reflecting on the game, Tuchel explained that his team missed a number of good goalscoring opportunities to kill off the game before Luis de la Fuente's team made the most of their chances.

"I think we had the worst possible start against a team like Spain, who loves to control the game and loves to play with confidence and on the ball," Tuchel said on Sky Sports.

"The reaction was OK. It cost us a little bit in confidence. It's normal.

"I think we had another two big mistakes in the build-up situations and conceded two big chances, survived the chances, and then we grew into the game.

"We got the momentum, the belief back, scored the equaliser, scored the second goal, could have scored a third one in the first half. Should absolutely score the third one in the second half."

"The result is not what we wanted. I think we could have won it, so we have to live with it, recover from it, learn from it, do what we did good on the same level, and reduce and improve our own mistakes."

A delighted De la Fuente added: "I think the game was under control most of the time, apart from the six or seven minutes where we got disconnected and they punished us.

"We had to pay more attention to cover the spaces against a rival against England and a superpower with their talent -- but I think we had the game under control.

"This generation is exceptional and they are still hungry, and still want to keep playing. Numbers are objective indicators of what we see, but we still want to improve and grow."

England next face Czechia on Tuesday as Spain take on Croatia.
