Hansi Flick praises Barcelona's Fermin Lopez in Copa del Rey victory

Hansi Flick has praised Barcelona's mentality and singled out Fermin Lopez for special praise after the Catalans secured a 2-0 win over Racing Santander to reach the Copa del Rey quarter-finals at El Sardinero.

Goals from Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal sealed the result on Thursday night as Barcelona moved a step closer to retaining the trophy. Flick was pleased with the professional way his side handled a demanding away tie and was quick to credit Racing for their approach.

"In the end, 2-0, that's what counts," Flick said after the match. "What I appreciated most about the opponents was their bravery. They had nothing to lose. There was a great atmosphere and I liked how they defended. I hope Racing will go up to the First Division."

The Barcelona head coach stressed that progress in cup football is earned through attitude rather than reputation.

"For Racing, it was one of the most important matches of the year," Flick explained. "You don't win this type of game because of the name, but because of the attitude. It was important to show that. For us, it was also an important match and we were serious, with the right mentality."

Flick also addressed his decision to start Joan Garcia in goal ahead of more established options.

"He finished with a clean sheet," Flick said. "He played because we decided that to be the case. We'll see what happens in the next few games. It's not decided yet. He may play every game, but we have to manage him and see how he is physically."

One of the standout moments came from Fermin Lopez, who impressed after coming off the bench. Flick did not hide his admiration for the midfielder's impact.

"He is special," Flick said. "No player is like him. I love his attitude and his dynamics. He can change match situations, play the right pass and he's always involved. He's a very good player."

Barcelona now turn their attention to the quarter-final draw, encouraged by a controlled performance and growing competition within the squad.
