Grant Johnson offers fresh insight into Bafana’s AFCON campaign

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson has offered a fresh perspective on their Africa Cup of Nations campaign ahead of the round of 16 clash against Cameroon at the Al Medina Stadium on Sunday.

A long-serving member of head coach Hugo Broos’ technical team, Johnson has operated largely behind the scenes since the Belgian’s arrival and brings significant experience from major tournaments both as a player and later as a coach.

Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, Johnson shed light on the logistical planning, preparation and tactical considerations following Bafana’s move from Marrakesh to Rabat.

"Yeah we're based in Marrakesh. Our hotels, the facilities, and the training pitch have all been amazing. In the last AFCON, we went to every city in Ivory Coast so we're used to travelling.

"We're looking forward to be playing in Rabat - we have played there before against Morocco."

Johnson is aware of the excitement from fans to see South Africa take on The Indomitable Lions – he says it’s expected when two giants collide.

Bafana came out of the group stages with two victories against Angola and Zimbabwe, losing to leaders Egypt.

The goalie coach wants to see an improvement and fewer mistakes.

"Hopefully lessons have been learned, and that we're not going to make the same mistakes, particularly against Zimbabwe."
