France held by Italy as Belgium punish Turkey in Nations League

France were held to a 1-1 draw by Italy in Zinedine Zidane's first home match as head coach, while Belgium returned to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Turkey in the UEFA Nations League.

Michael Olise put France ahead against Italy before Alessandro Bastoni equalised, while Kevin De Bruyne scored twice as Belgium secured all three points.

Zidane frustrated as Italy fight back

Zidane's first home match in charge of France ended in a draw, although Les Bleus extended their unbeaten run in competitive home matches to seven games.

France started with an aggressive high press but Italy created the first clear chance inside 10 minutes. Michael Kayode's cross was left by Dayot Upamecano, allowing Moise Kean to shoot from close range, but Mike Maignan produced an excellent reflex save.

France responded when Michael Olise's cross was deflected onto the crossbar by Sandro Tonali, but Italy remained well organised and limited the hosts' chances.

Kean thought he had given Italy the lead before half-time when he finished from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

France continued to push after the break and Desire Doue forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a save with a curling effort.

The breakthrough finally came from a set-piece. Olise delivered an excellent free-kick which went in off the underside of the crossbar, giving Donnarumma no chance.

Italy refused to fold, however, and Bastoni equalised after winning possession high up the pitch following a poor first touch from Lucas Da Cunha. The Inter Milan defender stayed composed before slotting the ball past Maignan.

Both sides had opportunities to win the game late on. Maignan denied Kean with a header, while Donnarumma made another important save from Eduardo Camavinga before keeping out Bradley Barcola's late effort.

France were reduced to 10 men when Upamecano received a second yellow card for pulling back Kean.

Despite dropping two points, France remain unbeaten in the Nations League group stage and sit top of Group A1.

Zidane was pleased with the overall performance but admitted his side could have taken more from the match.

"It was tight, but I'm happy with the performance of my side and what I've seen," Zidane told UEFA.

"Of course, it's a slightly frustrating result because we perhaps deserved a little more. I think we deserved more from tonight, especially up until their goal. We certainly could have scored a second goal."

Zidane also believes France are developing a strong foundation under his leadership.

"It bodes well, especially in terms of what we've managed to put in place," he added. "I think I can be very proud of my team."

De Bruyne brilliance sinks Turkey

Belgium moved back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Turkey, with De Bruyne producing two outstanding goals.

Turkey had started positively after struggling in their previous match against Italy, but De Bruyne punished them when he was given space in midfield.

The Belgium captain exchanged passes with Dodi Lukebakio before receiving the ball back on the edge of the penalty area. He then fired a precise finish through Abdulkerim Bardakci and into the bottom corner.

Turkey continued to threaten in an entertaining first half.

Arda Guler caused problems with his set-pieces, while Bardakci and Merih Demiral both went close with headers. Guler also tested Senne Lammens with a curling effort.

Belgium had chances of their own, with Hans Vanaken and Lukebakio forcing saves from Ugurcan Cakir.

Turkey came close to an equaliser before the interval when Demiral headed over from close range.

The visitors continued to attack after the break, with Ferdi Kadioglu shooting wide and Lukebakio hitting the post.

De Bruyne then struck again.

Youri Tielemans won possession from Yunus Akgun before finding De Bruyne outside the area, and the midfielder produced a superb curling finish into the top corner.

Belgium sealed the victory late on when Charles De Ketelaere took a quick free-kick and delivered the ball into the six-yard box, where substitute Romelu Lukaku was on hand to finish.

The victory was slightly overshadowed by bookings for Tielemans and De Bruyne, meaning both midfielders will miss Belgium's next match against France.

For Turkey, it was another frustrating result after they remained without a point in their first Nations League A campaign.

Belgium, meanwhile, bounced back from their previous defeat by France and strengthened their position in the group.
