Ex-Bafana midfielder Lance Davids set for Bayern Munich internship

Davids, 41, retired from professional football more than a decade ago, making his final appearance for hometown club Ajax Cape Town before returning to Belgium, where he is now based. 

The former Lierse player is currently heading up football operations at an agency that represents athletes, while exploring a future as a Sporting Director.

The internship at Bayern, which has been in the works for some time, is expected to take place during the current FIFA break and underlines Davids’ commitment to broadening his football education.

Davids has previously spoken about the need for former players to earn their place in football administration rather than assuming their playing careers automatically qualify them for senior positions. 

That philosophy appears to be driving his latest move, with the former Bafana international seeking practical exposure to the structures, decision-making and day-to-day operations of one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Furthermore, the public broadcaster understands there have also been enquiries locally about Davids taking up roles in line with his ambitions. 

However, at the time, he felt making that transition into a senior football administration position may have been premature without first gaining further experience and education to help him thrive. 

For Davids, the Bayern opportunity represents another chapter in a career that has taken him from the 2010 FIFA World Cup stage to football operations and now towards a potential future in club management.

His pursuit of education and practical experience could position him for a Sporting Director role in the years ahead and the Bayern placement is part of the broader course Davids is studying as he is set to graduate next year.
