Newcastle United have strengthened their goalkeeping department with the signing of highly-rated French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims on a long-term contract.

The 20-year-old arrives on Tyneside after an impressive season in Ligue 2, where he made 34 appearances and kept 15 clean sheets. Jaouen has also earned recognition at international level, representing France's Under-21 side.

The young goalkeeper began his professional career at Guingamp before joining Reims in 2023. He gained valuable experience through loan spells with Rodez and USL Dunkerque, where he helped the club reach the Coupe de France semi-finals during the 2024/25 campaign before they were beaten by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking after completing the move, Jaouen expressed his excitement about joining the Premier League club.

"I'm really excited to become a Newcastle United player," he said.

"When I visited the training ground, I could see how passionate everyone is about the club and the work they do. I loved the environment straight away. I also had the chance to see the stadium and it's huge.

"I've heard so much about the supporters and how they are the best in the country. The passion of the entire city and the atmosphere at St James' Park are famous throughout football, and I can't wait to experience that for myself."

Jaouen also highlighted the qualities he believes he can bring to the team.

"As a goalkeeper, I enjoy one-on-one situations and playing as a modern keeper, building from the back and being comfortable with the ball at my feet. Now I want to develop alongside the amazing players and staff here, enjoy my football, and prove my value on the pitch."

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe welcomed the arrival of the Frenchman and believes he has significant potential.

"Ewen is a great addition and I am delighted to welcome him to Newcastle United," Howe said.

"He is an exciting young goalkeeper who has shown real promise during his time in France. He has a calmness and presence that belies his age, and he's someone we feel can grow and improve within our environment."

Sporting director Ross Wilson revealed the club had been tracking Jaouen for several months before completing the deal.

"This is a signing we have been working hard on for a number of months, and we are really pleased to get it over the line," Wilson said.

"Ewen is a hugely talented young goalkeeper who has gained a lot of admirers across European clubs. What stood out for us was his ambition, his focus and his determination to be here."

Jaouen is expected to join Howe's senior squad immediately as Newcastle continue to build for the future.
