Emre Can appointed Borussia Dortmund captain for Bundesliga season

Following the announcement of Marco Reus stepping down as Borussia Dortmund skipper, the team's new captain has been revealed.

German international Emre Can will lead the squad in the upcoming 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign, confirming the news from Dortmund's training camp in San Diego on Wednesday.

Throughout the team's impressive second half of the previous Bundesliga campaign under coach Edin Terzic, Can proved to be a crucial figure. Despite some speculation surrounding a potential transfer, the 29-year-old secured a contract extension last weekend. Defender Niklas Sule and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel have been appointed as alternates.

Terzic confirmed Can's captaincy to media, stating, "Emre Can is the new captain of our team, with Gregor Kobel as his deputy. Niklas Süle is also part of the leadership group. The team council will also include Marco Reus, Sebastien Haller, and Julian Brandt."

Expressing his pride in the new role, Can said, "It's an honor to lead the team onto the field as captain of such a prestigious club. I'm grateful to those who have entrusted me with this responsibility. I will continue to lead by example and recognize that I can't do it alone."

Under the leadership of Can, Dortmund aim to maintain their winning momentum and compete at the highest level in the upcoming Bundesliga season.
