Eduardo Mendy impressed by Mamelodi Sundowns after FIFA Cup defeat

Al Ahli goalkeeper and captain Eduardo Mendy has praised Mamelodi Sundowns for putting on a show in their 2-1 victory over the Saudi side in their FIFA Intercontinental Cup clash at Loftus Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Asian champions faced their African counterparts in a fixture Mendy believes slipped away from the visitors after they failed to capitalise on their chances.

Mendy said Al Ahli knew they were facing a formidable Sundowns side and expected a difficult encounter.

"We played a strong opponent, as we expected. We were not surprised by the level, but I think we faced a strong team, as I said already. Even though we played a strong team, we produced very good football, " said Mendy.

The former Senegal international admitted the dressing room was deflated considering the multiple chances they let slip away in the first half especially.

"We had the best situations, especially in the first half, but unfortunately, we didn't score. At this level, when it's a final, it's about details, and the details didn't go our way. So, we are very frustrated and disappointed because I think we could have gone for more. But this is football; we need to rest and, moving forward, think about our next goals."

Even in his disappointment, Mendy added that his experience of South Africa was one that will live long in memory.
