Downs breakthrough on Williams deal

Mamelodi Sundowns could finally seal the transfer of Bafana Bafana and SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams following a breakthrough in negotiations earlier this week, SABC Sport has learnt.

The two clubs had been deadlocked in the arrangement of the transfer with the initial one-year loan agreement for another goalkeeper, Ricardo Goss, the hurdle for Williams to move to Chloorkop before the 2022/23 season kicks off next month.

Sundowns are ready to meet their crosstown rival™s valuation of their skipper, who still has a contract running until June 2024, but were not willing to allow Goss to leave permanently to join SSU.

Information gathered by SABC Sport has revealed that SSU have now asked to sign Goss on a two-year loan deal and want at least another two players in exchange on top of what would then have been the agreed transfer fee.

The names of Thabang Sibanyoni, Luvuyo Phewa, Gift Motupa and Promise Mkhuma have been discussed, but it is understood the two clubs have not settled on any just yet for the moves to be finalised.

Sibanyoni had a stellar season for AmaTuks in the GladAfrica Championship (now The Motsepe Foundation Championship) and so did Phewa while on loan at the University of Pretoria, reaching the promotion play-offs.

Motupa and Mkhuma hardly kicked a ball at Sundowns over the last year and would probably relish an opportunity elsewhere.

Both the Sundowns and SSU camps are confident they are moving closer to finding each other in this Williams transfer saga, especially given that the player has publicly stated that he would have no issues joining the Brazilians.

Goss is also eager to start playing again having been the club™s third - and at times fourth - choice goalkeeper behind Denis Onyango, Kennedy Mweene and Reyaad Pieterse.

Sundows coach Rulani Mokwena confirmed to SABC Sport this week that the club had room for an experienced goalkeeper given that Onyango and Mweene are 37-years-old.
