Deniz Undav scores twice, jokes about Harry Kane chase in Stuttgart victory

Deniz Undav led from the front as VfB Stuttgart powered to a 5-2 win over FC Augsburg, then joked he is still chasing Harry Kane after cutting the gap in the scoring charts.

Stuttgart delivered a strong response after a mixed week, taking control early at the WWK Arena. Undav opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Tiago Tomas and Nikolas Nartey struck in quick succession to give the visitors a commanding lead inside the first half-hour.

Reflecting on the performance, Undav said: "It wasn't a perfect week. We wanted to show a reaction today â- and we did that." His side's attacking play was sharp, but he admitted there were moments of concern. "It was a good game offensively, but we took our foot off the gas in a typical way, which made it unnecessarily tense for a while."

Augsburg responded through goals from Fredrik Rieder and Arne Maier, but Stuttgart quickly restored control. Undav grabbed his second just after the restart, showing his striker's instinct inside the box, before Ermedin Demirovic sealed the win late on.

Explaining his approach, Undav said: "As a striker, I speculate a lot. The important thing is to be there at the right moment and stay calm - that worked well for me today."

The forward also kept the mood light when asked about the Bundesliga scoring race. "I'll still catch Kane! I managed to make up one goal on him this matchday," he said with a smile.

In the 2025/26 Bundesliga season, Harry Kane has scored 31 goals and Deniz Undav has scored 18 goals. Kane leads the league's scoring charts for Bayern Munich, while Undav is the second-highest scorer, playing for Stuttgart.

On his ambitions with the Germany national team, Undav joked: "I want to be captain! No, just kidding." He added: "Of course I want to play and show myself as much as possible, but overall I want to fit into the team and enjoy the experience."

Following Sunday's result, VfB Stuttgart is in 3rd place and FC Augsburg is in 10th place in the Bundesliga standings.

Stuttgart's convincing win underlined their attacking quality, with Undav's goals and personality standing out on a confident afternoon.
