Deborah Chemutai claims maiden Absa Run Your City Joburg 10km title

Chemutai, who was competing in only her second race of the series after finishing third in Tshwane last month, went all the way to the top of the podium in the City of Gold.

She finished ahead of compatriot Mercy Jelimo, who clocked 33:10, while Easter Borura completed an all-Kenyan podium in third place in a time of 33:27.

Karabo Mailula was the first South African home in sixth place.

Chemutai was delighted to finally claim her first victory in the series.

"I'm very happy that I won this race because it was tough, and I gave my best despite the difficult course."

Chemutai admitted that the hot weather made the race difficult and prevented her from improving her time.

However, the Kenyan was still happy to cross the finish line first, especially because she did not expect to win the race.

The talented Kenyan was also impressed by the organization of the Absa Run Your City series in Tshwane and Joburg.

She praised the organisers for putting together another successful event.

After competing in a few local races, Chemutai also had some advice for South African women runners.

She urged them to remain disciplined and continue working hard to reach the level of Kenyan runners on the international road-running scene.

"All I can say is that you have to stay disciplined and train hard every day, and there is nothing else needed except for that."
