Cape Town City a refreshing test for Mamelodi Sundowns - Rushine De Reuck

Cape Town City might have seen their six-game DStv Premiership winning streak recently ended, but they remain a refreshing test for reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, according to defender Rushine De Reuck.

The Citizens were enjoying an unprecedented purple patch in the club’s history until crosstown rivals Stellenbosch FC put a stop to it two weekends ago.

City now host Sundowns this afternoon determined to close the gap on the leaders, but De Reuck says The Brazilians aren’t in the business of dropping points.

"It's going to be a very challenging game for us, they've shown this season that they are a good team, they've been very competitive and that's why they've been winning so many games," said De Reuck.

"But, for us, we need to take this game like we take every other game, and try our best to win it."

One of City’s biggest strengths have been the individual brilliance within their squad, with several players that stand out and will need to be monitored closely, adds the Bafana Bafana centre-back.

"They've got a few good players – actually, a lot of good players in their team, but they've got guys like Jaeden Rhodes, Taahier Goedeman, Khanyiso Mayo who've been doing so well. So, yeah, we need to really try our best to neutralise them," he added.

With the festive season in full swing, the league opted to schedule matches right through, especially given the upcoming recess enforced by the Africa Cup of Nations next month in Ivory Coast, but De Reuck doesn’t mind playing.

"For us, it doesn't really matter, we have a responsibility to win every game and be prepared for each and every one – it doesn't really matter whether it's festive or not. We need to win and that's our mentality," he concluded.
