Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany hospitalised after collapsing at training

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been hospitalised after collapsing while observing a training session involving the club's second team on Friday.

Reports from Germany indicated that the 40-year-old is in a stable condition.

The incident comes just days before Bayern's Bundesliga encounter with Freiburg on Sunday, potentially raising questions about the Belgian's availability for the fixture.

"Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday," said a statement from the Bundesliga club., external

"The first-team head coach was watching the second string's session.

"Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care.

"His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice."

Kompany had been battling a viral illness in the lead-up to his hospitalisation, which previously prevented him from attending Tuesday's media briefing ahead of Bayern's UEFA Champions League clash with Arsenal. Assistant coach Aaron Danks took his place at the press conference.

Despite his health concerns, the former Manchester City and Belgium defender was present on the touchline when Bayern faced Arsenal on Wednesday.

"Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery," said Bayern sporting director Max Eberl.

"Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs.

"His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery."
