Barcelona leading the race for Manchester City's Joao Cancelo - report

Barcelona's are reportedly in the driving seat to secure the services of Manchester City's defender Joao Cancelo.

Last season, the Blaugrana started with Hector Bellerin as their first-choice right-back. However, the Catalan player's performance fell short, leading to his departure for Sporting CP in January. Despite signing Julian Araujo from LA Galaxy, there are doubts about his ability to perform at the highest level.

Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano discussed Arsenal's options for the position. Confirming the Gunners' discussions with Cancelo's agent, Romano revealed that Barcelona are currently the frontrunner.

"I haven't heard of any concrete talks for Sacha Boey, just a lot of rumours. Joao Cancelo is highly regarded, and talks with his agent have taken place, but Barcelona are the favourites to secure his signature. Arsenal's priority target now is Jurrien Timber," Romano explained in his exclusive Substack column.

This update follows Pep Guardiola's recent statement that City did not block Cancelo's potential move to Barcelona in January, contrary to Xavi Hernandez's claims. This suggests that a deal could still be on the cards.

Considering Barcelona's limited resources, a loan deal is the most likely scenario. Although Cancelo's stock has dipped in the past year, the Blaugrana are keen to avoid a significant financial commitment to the Portuguese player.
