Banyana Banyana captain: The aim is to qualify for the World Cup

The WAFCON will take place from 25 July to 16 August in Morocco with Banyana in Group B alongside Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Tanzania.

Speaking to the media earlier today, Jane says the team is ready for the continental showpiece.

"Yes, it's very important for us to do well at this upcoming tournament. We know the previous one didn't go very well. But above it all, what's at stake is a World Cup qualifying tournament, so the main objective is to qualify for the World Cup and then take it from there," said Jane.

The national team made history in Australia/New Zealand in 2023 by qualifying for the round of 16 alongside Nigeria and Morocco.

Jane says they believe they can perform even better in Brazil.

"When we qualified for the round of 16, we saw the endless possibilities. Once you reach the knockout stages, anything is possible. So we are hoping to qualify first to. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves, and when we qualify , we will try to do better than in the previous World Cup."

The preliminary squad is a mixture of youngsters as well as senior players. 

The captain says it makes her happy that the young players are willing to learn from them.

Coach Desiree Ellis will announce her final 26-member squad, trimming it from 31.

The TS Galaxy star shares how the mood has been in this camp.

"It feels good to be back with the team. It is a very important week. We are hoping we can put our best foot forward, make the coach's job difficult, and ensure that the team selected will go out there and represent the nation very well."
