Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers set for record-breaking Chelsea switch

Chelsea are set to complete the signing of Morgan Rogers after agreeing a club-record 117-million-pound transfer with Aston Villa, with the England international expected to undergo a medical on Monday.

The 23-year-old midfielder will put pen to paper on a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the agreement also containing the option of an additional season.

The move represents another major statement by new head coach Xabi Alonso as he continues reshaping his squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

If finalised, the transfer will establish a new benchmark for an English player, eclipsing the 116 million pounds Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

It also makes Rogers Chelsea's most expensive signing, overtaking the £107 million the club spent on Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

Rogers leaves Villa after scoring 21 Premier League goals in 85 appearances and helping the club lift last season's Europa League trophy.

The former Manchester City youngster joined Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial 8 million-pound package that could increase to 15 million.

Because Middlesbrough negotiated a 20% sell-on clause based on Villa's profit, the Championship side are expected to receive at least 20.4 million from the deal, with the figure potentially increasing if add-ons are activated. The club believes it will be the largest sell-on payment ever received in an English transfer.

Rogers has earned 22 England caps, scoring once, and featured in seven matches during the 2026 World Cup.
