Aston Villa announce capture of Brazilian wonderkid Alysson Edward from Gremio

Aston Villa have moved early in the January transfer window by completing the signing of teenage Brazilian winger Alysson Edward from Gremio, adding another option to Unai Emery's attacking group.

The 19-year-old arrives from the Porto Alegre club after Villa agreed a deal reported to be worth around 8â-8.7 million pounds up front, with performance-related add-ons that could take the total fee close to £10 million. The club see Alysson as a long-term development prospect rather than an immediate first-team regular.

Alysson, a left-footed right winger and graduate of Gremio's academy, made his senior debut in mid-2024 and featured regularly over the past year in domestic competition.

Across the 2024 and 2025 campaigns, he made more than 30 appearances in Brazil's top flight, contributing goals and assists as Gremio finished ninth in Serie A last season. His performances highlighted his pace, balance and ability to operate in wide attacking areas.

At Villa Park, Alysson joins a forward line already packed with options, including Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Jadon Sancho, Donyell Malen, Harvey Elliott and Evann Guessand. Emery is understood to view the Brazilian as a player who can be gradually integrated into the squad while adapting to the demands of English football.

The transfer marks Emery's first signing of the January window as Villa continue their push near the top end of the Premier League table. Currently sitting third, Villa return to league action at home to Nottingham Forest on January 3, with Alysson now part of a squad aiming to sustain its strong domestic form in the second half of the season.
