Speaking ahead of Sunday's trip to the City Ground, Slot admitted Frimpong is not yet ready after nearly a month out.
"We hope he will be involved next week," Slot said. "He is progressing well, but this game comes too soon."
The Reds are also without Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo, leaving Slot short of options, particularly in defence.
With Bradley and Frimpong sidelined, Curtis Jones could again be used at right-back after impressing in that role against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup.
Slot praised Jones for his versatility and attitude.
"Curtis is a very good player - I've said this many times to him and he agrees," Slot said. "Unfortunately for him, he is competing in a position where we have many strong players available.
"If he was playing in another position, he would have played much more. But when we need him elsewhere, he always delivers."
There is also positive news on Joe Gomez, who trained this week and has made substitute appearances in the last two matches. Slot confirmed the defender is ready to start if needed and would provide a more natural fit at full-back.
The manager also highlighted the squad's flexibility, pointing to the adaptability of players such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch this season.
As for Isak, Slot reassured supporters that the forward will return before the end of the campaign, with a comeback possible around the March international break.
Liverpool head to Nottingham knowing squad depth will again be tested, but Slot made it clear: whoever steps in is expected to perform.
