AFCON: Senegal seal top spot in Group D, DR Congo and Benin advance to last 16

Senegal made sure of top spot in Group D at the Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-0 win against Benin while DR Congo sealed second place after beating Botswana by the same scoreline.

Senegal 3-0 Benin

Senegal rounded out an unbeaten group stage after Abdoulaye Seck gave them the lead seven minutes the halftime break.

The Lions of Teranga upped the tempo after the interval and duly made it 2-0 when Habib Diallo found the back of the net just after the hour mark.

The victory was sealed in stoppage-time when substitute Cherif Ndiaye converted a penalty.

The game did end on a sour note for Senegal though when experienced defender Kalidou Koulibaly was shown a red card and will miss the last 16 clash.

Despite the defeat, Benin also qualified for the knockout as one of the best third-placed teams after finishing the group with three points.

DR Congo 3-0 Botswana

Democratic Republic of Congo were sent on their way to a routine victory when Nathanael Mbuku opened the scoring in the 31st minute.

Gael Kakuta put the his team 2-0 in front after converting a penalty four minutes before halftime after a handball in the box.

Kakuta struck again to make it 3â-0, controlling Theo Bongonda's cross before calmly picking his spot to complete his brace.
